Which battery does your motorcycle need?
A motorcycle battery is identified by its reference (for example YTX9-BS, YT12B-BS, YTZ10S…), which sets its size, terminals, voltage (12 V on almost all, some classics 6 V) and capacity. The key figures are the capacity in amp-hours (Ah) and the cold cranking current (CCA, measured at -18 °C): the higher the CCA, the stronger the cranking power. Tell us the make and model of your bike, or the reference printed on the current battery, and we'll give you the exact equivalent.
A healthy battery at rest reads between 12.6 and 12.8 V. Below 12.4 V it is partially charged and should be checked; the bike's alternator should return between 13.8 and 14.7 V with the engine running. If your bike cranks weakly after a few days parked, it's almost always the battery.
Types of motorcycle battery
- Conventional "freshpack" (SLI): a lead-acid battery supplied dry and activated with the acid at the moment of fitting, so it arrives at full capacity. Great value for general-use bikes and scooters.
- Maintenance-free AGM: the electrolyte is absorbed in glass fibre, so it is sealed, vibration-resistant and copes better with high revs and demanding starts. Ideal for sport, trail and large-displacement bikes.
- Lithium (information): lighter with good discharge, used in racing and some modern bikes. It needs compatible chargers and isn't always the best choice in hot climates; we'll advise you if your bike accepts it.
