Batteries for Caravans

Málaga Baterías is the specialist store for caravan, motorhome, camper van and pleasure boat batteries in Málaga and the Costa del Sol. Official Varta Distributor with permanent stock of service batteries (Dual Purpose, Deep Cycle AGM and LiFePO4 lithium) ready for the challenges of the Andalusian coastal climate: humidity, salt and sustained heat.

The big difference: starter vs service

A very common mistake in caravans and motorhomes is using the same battery to start the engine and to power the living area. A normal starter battery is designed to deliver high current for a few seconds and then recharge. A service battery is designed for repeated deep discharges over time.

For this reason, a caravan or motorhome benefits from two separate batteries: a starter battery for the engine and one or more service batteries (deep cycle) for the living area. With only one battery used for everything, expect 12-18 months of life; well-sized service batteries last 5-7 years.

Technologies for caravan, camper and motorhome

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)

Electrolyte absorbed in a glass mat. Sealed, maintenance-free, no acid leaks. Withstand many charge/discharge cycles, more resistant to vibration and heat than conventional. Excellent value for service use in regularly used motorhomes. We carry the full Varta Professional Dual Purpose AGM and Professional Deep Cycle AGM range.

GEL batteries

Gelled electrolyte. Most resistant to deep discharges (down to 30-40% state of charge without damage). Very long life with the right gel charger.

Dual Purpose batteries

Compromise between starter and service. Valid option when the caravan or camper does few off-grid nights per year. The Varta Professional Dual Purpose AGM range is the most popular.

LiFePO4 lithium batteries

The most advanced technology for modern motorhomes: one lithium battery replaces 2-3 equivalent AGM batteries, weighs 4× less, has 2,000-6,000 cycle life (10× plumb). Allows 90-100% discharge without damage. High upfront cost, but lower cost per kWh delivered.

Conventional traction monoblock

Open lead-acid with caps, large capacity (110-250 Ah). Cheap but require maintenance and cannot be tilted. Use has decreased in favour of AGM and lithium.

How to size the service battery correctly

  1. List the consumers in Ah/day: LED lights (5-15 Ah), water pump (3-8 Ah), compressor fridge (40-60 Ah/day), TV (5 Ah/h), USB chargers, diesel parking heater (2-5 Ah/h).
  2. Sum daily consumption and multiply by desired autonomy days.
  3. Apply safety factor: AGM only to 50% depth of discharge, lithium up to 90%. Useful capacity = 50% × AGM Ah; ≈90% × LiFePO4 Ah.

In store, tell us what you have and how many off-grid nights per year, and we calculate the right battery or bank.

Varta range for leisure and marine

  • Varta Professional Dual Purpose AGM – market reference for service + light start. Available in 60, 75, 95, 100, 140, 180 and 230 Ah.
  • Varta Professional Deep Cycle AGM – designed for repeated deep discharge.
  • Varta Professional Starter – robust starter for the motorhome engine.
  • Varta Professional Marine SuperCycle – dual purpose for boats, optimised for marine use.
  • LiFePO4 batteries compatible with European charging systems (Victron, Mastervolt, MPPT solar).

Leisure and marine applications

  • Trailer caravans (Hobby, Adria, Knaus, Bürstner, Fendt).
  • Motorhomes: A-class, low-profile, semi-integral, overcab.
  • Campers on vans (T6, Vito, Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Ducato, Master).
  • DIY camperised vans with autonomous electrics.
  • Pleasure boats: motorboats, sailboats, RIBs and inflatables with outboard.
  • Electric golf carts.
  • Mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs.
  • Off-grid solar systems for cabins, plots and shelters.

The Málaga factor: coastal climate and service batteries

Southern Spain is not central Europe: our service batteries suffer especially from:

  • Sustained summer heat: accelerates self-discharge; AGM handles it better than flooded.
  • Coastal humidity and salt air (Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Nerja): corrosion on terminals. Tighten well and apply dielectric protection.
  • Long winter inactivity: many motorhomes are parked October-March. Keep them charged with a maintainer, or ideally with permanent solar.

We almost always recommend AGM or lithium for service on the Costa del Sol: better heat, inactivity and humidity resistance.

FAQ for caravan and motorhome batteries

How many service batteries do I need?

Depends on consumption. Reference: weekend camper with LEDs, water pump, small compressor fridge and USB falls short below 100 Ah. A family motorhome with big fridge, TV, parking heater and 3-4 days autonomy may need 200-300 Ah AGM or 100-150 Ah lithium.

Can I mix a new AGM with an old one in parallel?

Not recommended. Batteries should be same model, same capacity and same manufacturing date. New and old "level out on the weakest" and last much less.

Do I need a specific charger for AGM or lithium?

Yes. Most modern chargers (Victron, CTEK, Schaudt, NDS) have selectable profiles for AGM, gel and lithium. Wrong profile reduces life. If your motorhome is older, consider updating the charger.

Is lithium really cost-effective?

Yes, with intensive use. A 100 Ah lithium battery equals a 200 Ah AGM in useful capacity, weighs 4× less, takes half the space and lasts 8-10× more cycles. Initial premium amortises in 3-5 years for heavy users. For occasional use, a well-sized AGM is still more cost-effective.

Do you serve marine customers in the Costa del Sol ports?

Yes. We serve regular customers from Málaga, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella (La Bajadilla, Puerto Banús), Estepona and Caleta de Vélez ports with specific marine references (Varta Professional Marine SuperCycle, Varta Professional Starter) prepared for the salt environment.
