What the battery replacement includes

The price we give you is fixed and covers everything needed for you to drive away with a car that starts:

• Free check beforehand. We test the battery with a Midtronics tester (voltage, state of charge and actual cold-cranking performance). If the battery is fine, we’ll tell you and you don’t replace anything.
• The right battery for your car. We look it up by number plate or model: size, terminal layout, capacity, cold-cranking power and technology (conventional, EFB or AGM).
• Fitting in store. We use a memory saver so the car doesn’t lose its radio, electric window or sensor settings while the battery is being swapped.
• Registering the new battery. On cars with Start-Stop and a battery management system (BMS) that require it, we register or code the battery so the system recognises it and charges it properly.
• Recycling the old battery. We keep it and dispose of it free of charge in line with the regulations.

How long it takes

On most cars, the replacement takes about 15 minutes from the moment you arrive. Some models have the battery in the boot, under a seat or behind a cover, and in those cases it takes us a little longer; we’ll tell you before we start. There’s no need to book: we serve customers on a first-come, first-served basis during shop opening hours, and you can wait while we do it.

How to tell if your battery needs replacing

• The starter motor turns over slowly or struggles more in the mornings.
• The Start-Stop has stopped working or switches itself off almost all the time.
• The battery warning light comes on or electrical warnings appear on the dashboard.
• You’ve had to jump-start the car with jump leads more than once in a short space of time.

Replace it yourself or go to a specialist workshop?

On older, simpler cars it can be done at home with care. On modern ones it’s worth thinking twice:

• The electronics are delicate. One wrong move when disconnecting or connecting can cause faults that cost far more than what you save.
• Many cars need the new battery to be registered. Without that step, the system carries on charging it as if it were the old one and it doesn’t last as long.
• The battery is heavy, corrosive and polluting. The used one has to be taken to an authorised collection point; here we recycle it at no cost.
• It might not be the battery. The check beforehand saves you from buying one you don’t need.

Cars with Start-Stop: why not just any battery will do

A car with Start-Stop starts many more times a day and needs an EFB or AGM battery, never a conventional one. At the very least, the same technology that was fitted as standard has to be fitted: if it had AGM, AGM goes in.
