Technical specialisation: five battery families, one single shop

At Málaga Baterías we cover the five main battery families on the market, each with its own technical particularities:

1) Starter batteries (combustion and mild-hybrid vehicles)

This is the battery that starts the petrol or diesel engine. What matters here is not only the capacity (Ah) but the cold cranking amps (CCA) and the technology. Today a 2015 Volkswagen Golf with Start-Stop and a 2024 Mercedes E-Class with a 48 V mild-hybrid system use very different batteries: conventional, EFB, AGM or auxiliary lithium-ion. Getting the reference right is what separates an installation that lasts 4–6 years from a premature replacement at 18 months.

2) Cyclic batteries (deep discharge)

Designed to withstand repeated charge and discharge cycles without losing capacity: caravans, boats, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, golf carts, cleaning machines. A starter battery used as a cyclic one lasts weeks; an AGM or lithium cyclic battery lasts years. Here, the mistake of buying "the cheapest one that fits the gap" comes at a very high price.

3) Stationary batteries (solar systems, UPS, alarms)

Intended to remain permanently connected to a system with occasional discharges and a long service life: off-grid or backup photovoltaic installations, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), alarm control panels, telecommunications systems. We work with AGM, GEL, lead-acid monobloc and LiFePO4 lithium batteries for these applications, with sizing advice.

4) Industrial batteries (traction)

For traction machinery: forklifts, electric pallet trucks, lifting platforms, industrial cleaning machines. These are large-format batteries (from 24 V to 80 V), with individual cells or monobloc, flooded lead-acid or sealed gel/AGM. We provide sales, installation and maintenance services.

5) Motorcycle and light vehicle batteries

Motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, quads, UTV buggies, jet skis and snowmobiles, small tractors. Here the electronics of each model are very specific: a gel battery where the manufacturer requires AGM can damage the regulator. We advise by make and model.

Batteries and Málaga's climate: what a local specialist should know

Málaga has a subtropical Mediterranean climate that is unique in Europe: long summers with high temperatures and high relative humidity, mild winters, and proximity to the sea across much of the province. This has a direct impact on the service life of a lead-acid battery.

• Sustained heat (June–September): accelerates the evaporation of the electrolyte in flooded batteries and self-discharge. It is the main cause of the "sudden death" of batteries at the end of summer. A battery that lasts 6 years in cold climates may last only 4 in Málaga if it is not properly maintained.
• Coastal salt air: corrodes terminals and connectors. On cars regularly parked in Málaga city, La Malagueta, El Palo, Marbella or Estepona we see sulphation and loss of contact that can be prevented with a good tightening and a coat of protective spray.
• Short urban journeys: are the enemy of the state of charge. If your daily routine only covers 4–6 km around town, your battery never reaches 100%, which within a few months causes sulphation and loss of capacity. This is where recommending a more cycle-resistant EFB/AGM battery, or a smart charger for the weekends, makes the difference.
• Marine and caravans: with the tourism and pleasure-boat activity of the Costa del Sol, every week we advise on service batteries (Dual Purpose, AGM, GEL) that must withstand humidity, corrosion and deep discharges in hot climates.

That is why, when a customer asks us for "the cheapest battery that fits", we don't give them that: we explain which one suits their real use in Málaga and show them the two or three reasonable alternatives.

As an authorised manager, when you buy a new battery we collect and recycle your used battery free of charge in compliance with current environmental regulations (RD 106/2008 and the new EU Regulation 2023/1542 on batteries, accumulators and waste batteries (in force since 2024)). Every year we recycle thousands of batteries, preventing lead, electrolytes and heavy metals from reaching the environment.
