The two figures we need are the voltage (12 V) and the capacity in Ah, plus the exact dimensions and the terminal type, because the battery compartment is usually a very tight fit. They are printed on the label of the battery you have now.
AGM or gel: which one suits you
- AGM: the most common choice. Sealed (no spills), maintenance free, good value for money and accepted for air and rail travel without any trouble.
- Gel: copes better with very deep discharges and sustained heat, and tends to last a little longer under heavy daily use. It costs a bit more.
Both are sealed and maintenance free: there is no water to top up and no risk of spillage, which matters in equipment used indoors. What you should not fit is a car starter battery: it will fail within a few months in this kind of service.
Tips to make them last longer
- Charge every day, even if you have not used the whole battery. These batteries suffer if they are left discharged.
- Do not run them flat: regularly reaching 0 % shortens their life considerably.
- If you are not going to use the equipment for several weeks, charge it fully beforehand and top it up once a month.
- Always replace both batteries at the same time and with the same model: a new one paired with an old one will fail quickly.
- In Málaga, avoid leaving the equipment in the sun or in a very hot storeroom: heat is what shortens battery life the most.
