What to do with a used car battery in Málaga

A starter battery does not go in the bin, in the yellow container or in the glass bank. It is hazardous waste: it contains lead and sulphuric acid, and the regulations require it to end up in the authorised treatment circuit. Disposing of it badly is an environmental problem and also an offence.

The good news is that you don't have to sort it out yourself. If you change the battery at a specialist in the sector, the old one stays there and follows the route the law sets out. Why you shouldn't keep it or throw it away

• Acid leaks: a knocked or aged case can seep electrolyte, which corrodes floors and burns skin.
• Electrical risk: even when it's «dead», it holds enough charge to cause a short circuit if the terminals touch metal.
• Contamination: the lead in a single battery can contaminate a huge amount of water and soil.
• It's illegal: putting it in household waste or leaving it in the street carries a fine.

While you still have it at home, keep it upright, in a cool, ventilated place, out of the reach of children and with the terminals protected (insulating tape is enough) so they can't make contact.

What the regulations say

Starter batteries are covered by Royal Decree 106/2008 on batteries and accumulators and by Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which tightens traceability and recycling targets across Europe. In practice both aim at the same thing: no battery should end up in landfill, and the lead, plastic and acid should be recovered.

The lead in a battery is almost entirely recyclable and goes back into making new batteries. That is why they are one of the products with the best recycling rate on the market: the circuit works well once the battery enters it.

Your options in Málaga

If you are going to change the battery, the easiest route is to do it where you buy the new one: you save yourself the trip and the handling of the waste. That is how it works in our shop.

If you are not buying a battery and simply want to get rid of an old one, the city of Málaga has municipal recycling centres (fixed and mobile) run by the Council, where household hazardous waste is accepted free of charge. It's worth checking current opening times and locations on the council website before you head over.

How we do it

You come to C/ La Orotava, 100 (29006 Málaga) with no appointment. We check the condition of your battery and your alternator free of charge —sometimes the battery isn't the problem— and if it does need replacing we fit the new one in around 15 minutes. The old one stays with us and is channelled through the route the regulations require, without you having to deal with anything.
