A hybrid's 12 V battery is not the traction battery
A hybrid has two batteries. The high-voltage one drives the electric motor and, in most hybrids, also starts the petrol engine. The 12 V one is auxiliary: it wakes the car up, powers the electronics and lets it switch to "READY". A hybrid's 12 V battery is usually AGM (EFB on some models) and not just any battery will do: technology, capacity, dimensions and, when it sits in the boot, gas venting all matter. That's why we always identify it by number plate.
Signs that the 12 V battery is failing
- The car won't switch to "READY" or the dashboard won't light up, even though the hybrid battery is charged.
- The key or central locking respond poorly, or system warnings appear on the dashboard.
- The car has been parked for several days or weeks, something that happens a lot in Málaga in summer and during long trips.
- It's hot: the Málaga heat shortens the life of any 12 V battery, hybrids' included.

What if my car is 100% electric?
Electric cars also have a 12 V battery for the electronics, and when it fails the car won't start either. Depending on the model it may be AGM or lithium. Message us with your number plate and we'll tell you whether we have the part and whether it can be replaced in the shop.
Frequently asked questions about hybrid 12 V batteries
Why does a hybrid car's 12 V battery fail?
Because of age, heat and the car standing unused. An AGM battery usually lasts between 4 and 7 years, but the Málaga heat and periods with the car unused shorten that.
Can I fit a normal 12 V battery in my hybrid?
It's not advisable. Most hybrids take a specific AGM in terms of capacity, dimensions and terminals, and if it sits in the boot it needs gas venting. We fit the one that matches your car by number plate.
Does the new battery need to be coded?
On some models, yes. We do it on the spot with diagnostic equipment, as part of the same replacement.
How long does the replacement take?
About 15 minutes on most hybrids, with no appointment. If the battery is somewhere hard to reach it may take a little longer; we'll tell you once we have your number plate.
