The battery you replace on a Hyundai Tucson is the 12 V one: around 60-70 Ah and 600-680 A on petrol, diesel and 48V MHEV versions, and around 45-60 Ah and 350-560 A on HEV and PHEV hybrids. It is conventional if your Tucson has no Start-Stop and EFB or AGM if it does. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we replace it with no appointment in about 15 minutes, including a free Midtronics test, BMS registration and recycling. Price fitted: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

The Tucson is one of Spain's best-selling SUVs and you see them everywhere in Málaga, mostly in 48V (MHEV) and hybrid versions. That is exactly why it causes confusion: a modern Tucson can carry two or three different batteries on board, and only one of them is replaced when the car won't start. At C/ La Orotava, 100 (Málaga) we fit it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes, as an Official Varta Distributor.

Which battery does the Hyundai Tucson take?

It depends on the generation (JM, TL or the current NX4) and above all on the engine. These are realistic guide ranges, not specific part numbers: we confirm the exact fit from your registration plate before touching anything.

Version12 V battery typeGuide figuresStart-Stop
Petrol or diesel without Start-Stop (older Tucson)Conventional (lead-acid)around 60-70 Ah / 540-640 ANo
1.6 T-GDi petrol or CRDi diesel with Start-StopEFB (or AGM where the maker requires it)around 60-70 Ah / 600-680 AYes
48V MHEV (mild hybrid)AGM or EFB 12 V + a separate 48 V lithium pack12 V: around 60-70 Ah / 600-680 AYes
HEV / PHEV (full and plug-in hybrid)AGM 12 V auxiliaryaround 45-60 Ah / 350-560 AYes (hybrid system)

The key point with the Tucson: its batteries are not all the same thing.

  • 12 V battery (lead, AGM or EFB): it cranks the engine or "wakes up" the system, and powers the electronics, lights, screen and locking. This is the one we sell and fit.
  • 48 V lithium battery on the MHEV: a small, independent pack that assists the engine and runs the extended Start-Stop. It is not a starter battery and is not replaced in a normal battery change.
  • High-voltage traction battery (Tucson HEV and PHEV): the lithium pack that drives the car electrically. It is high voltage, has its own manufacturer warranty and is handled by the official dealer network. We do not touch it.

So when a hybrid Tucson "won't start" and lights up half the dashboard, the culprit is almost always the humble flat 12 V battery — with the traction battery perfectly charged.

How to know which one is yours

The quick, error-proof way: send us your registration plate on WhatsApp or read it out over the phone. With it we identify your exact Tucson version and tell you the type (conventional, EFB or AGM), Ah, CCA, polarity, dimensions and the final fitted price. If you prefer to check yourself, the Ah and A (CCA) figures are printed on the battery in the engine bay, along with the AGM or EFB marking if it has one. Don't guess: on a Tucson with Start-Stop, fitting the wrong type costs you years of battery life.

You can also drop in for a free battery test with our Midtronics tester: we tell you the real state of health before you decide anything.

Signs it needs replacing

  • A "Start-Stop not available" message, or the engine stops shutting down at traffic lights: usually the first symptom, because the battery management system saves charge as soon as it detects a weak battery.
  • On MHEV and hybrid versions: the screen reboots, several warning lights come on at once, the system is slow to show "Ready" or never gets there. With a weak 12 V battery, the Tucson cannot even close the hybrid system relays.
  • Slow, lazy cranking on conventional versions, especially after the car has sat for a few days.
  • The 360 camera, powered tailgate or infotainment behave erratically at start-up.
  • The battery is more than 4 years old. In Málaga, with the heat, real life is 4-6 years for conventional and 5-7 years for AGM.

Watch out for a very typical Tucson pattern in Málaga: if you mostly do short city trips (Teatinos, the centre, Carretera de Cádiz) with the air conditioning at full blast, the battery never fully recharges and ages sooner.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Hyundai Tucson battery cost in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Málaga) a Hyundai Tucson battery costs 85-140 € if it is conventional, 130-230 € if it is EFB and 180-280 € if it is AGM, always with fitting included. The Tucson usually sits in the mid-to-upper part of each range because it carries a lot of electronics. The Midtronics test is free and you get a closed price before we start.

Do you replace the traction battery on a hybrid Tucson?

No. The traction battery on the Tucson HEV and PHEV is a high-voltage pack handled exclusively by the official dealer network and covered by its own manufacturer warranty. We replace the 12 V auxiliary battery, which is what leaves the car unable to start in most cases.

Does the 48V Tucson have two batteries?

Yes. It has a 48 V lithium battery that assists the engine and runs the Start-Stop, and a 12 V battery (normally AGM or EFB) that powers all the electronics and boots the system. We work with the 12 V one: it is the one that wears out over the years and causes starting failures.

Can I fit a conventional battery to a Tucson with Start-Stop?

No. A Tucson with Start-Stop needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional battery: a conventional one cannot cope with the constant start cycles and degrades within months. If your Tucson came with AGM it must stay AGM; if it came with EFB you can keep EFB or upgrade to AGM, but never go down from AGM to EFB.

Does the battery need coding when replaced on a Tucson?

On Tucson models with Start-Stop and a battery sensor on the negative terminal, the battery management system must be registered or reset after the change. We do it at the time of fitting, at no extra cost and without you losing the car settings.
