Need a battery for your Peugeot 208 in Málaga? The 208 is one of the most common cars on the city’s streets and, precisely because of how it gets used —short trips, traffic jams, on-street parking—, it’s one of the first to ask for a new battery. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify it from the number plate and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics test and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.

Which battery does the Peugeot 208 take?
There’s a generation gap worth being clear about: the 208 I (2012-2019) still offered entry-level versions without Start-Stop and small batteries, while the 208 II (from 2019), on the CMP platform, has Start-Stop as standard across the range, higher standby power draw and a distinctly more demanding battery. Fitting a 208 II with what worked on a 208 I is an expensive mistake.
| Version | Start-Stop | Recommended type | Indicative capacity / cranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| 208 I (2012-2019) 1.0 / 1.2 VTi without Start-Stop | No | Conventional | 50-60 Ah / 480-540 A |
| 208 I (2012-2019) with Start-Stop (1.2 PureTech, 1.4/1.6 HDi) | Yes | EFB | Around 60 Ah / 560-600 A |
| 208 II (2019-) 1.2 PureTech 75/100/130 Start-Stop | Yes | EFB (AGM as an upgrade) | 60-70 Ah / 600-680 A |
| 208 II (2019-) 1.5 BlueHDi 100 Start-Stop | Yes | EFB or AGM | Around 70 Ah / 680-720 A |
| 208 II 1.2 Hybrid 100/136 (48 V, from 2024) | Yes | EFB or AGM (12 V system) | 60-70 Ah / 640-720 A |
| e-208 (fully electric) | — | 12 V auxiliary (AGM or conventional depending on year) | 50-60 Ah / 480-560 A |
These are indicative ranges: Peugeot has fitted several sizes within the same engine depending on year, trim and market, and we’re not going to invent a part number for you over the internet. What is firm: if your 208 has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional one. You can move up from EFB to AGM; never drop from AGM to EFB. And watch the 208’s engine bay: it’s compact, and the case size and the hold-down type matter as much as the Ah. Confirm it with the number plate.
Golden rule
If your Peugeot 208 has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional battery.
You can move up from EFB to AGM. Never go down from AGM to EFB.
How to find out which one is yours
Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Give us the number plate —from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we’ll confirm the type, the size and the final fitted price for your 208’s battery.
Want an idea first? Use the “which battery do I need?” test. And if what you want to know is whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes, no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just a voltage reading.
Three details help narrow it down: year, engine (VTi, PureTech, BlueHDi, Hybrid or e-208) and whether the engine switches itself off at traffic lights (that’s Start-Stop, and it changes the battery type).

Signs it is time to replace it
The 208 has a very recognisable failure pattern, and it’s almost always tied to city use:
- It won’t start after a few days parked. A classic on 208s used only at weekends or left in the garage over the holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it doesn’t make it.
- Lazy starts in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery that’s short on charge: in the morning it’s cold and flat; after some driving, the alternator has put back just enough.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The 208 II disables it on its own when the battery isn’t at the required state of charge. It’s not a system quirk: it’s a warning.
- The touchscreen reboots or loses the clock when you switch on the ignition.
- Locks and windows are slow, or the car takes a while to “wake up” when you unlock it.
And here’s the nuance almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. A 208 doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes a recharge —starting uses a lot and the alternator doesn’t have time to put it back— so the battery lives chronically half charged. That causes sulphation and shortens its life. Add Málaga’s heat and you can see why an urban 208 often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). If that’s your case, a 30-40 minute run every now and then, or a trickle charger, makes a real difference.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery does the Peugeot 208 take?
The Peugeot 208 takes a 12 V battery of between 50 and 70 Ah and 480-720 A of cranking current, depending on the version. The entry-level 208 I (2012-2019) without Start-Stop is happy with a conventional battery of 50-60 Ah; the 208 I with Start-Stop and the whole 208 II (from 2019, Start-Stop as standard) need EFB or AGM of 60-70 Ah; the 1.5 BlueHDi is around 70 Ah and 680-720 A; and the electric e-208 uses a 12 V auxiliary battery of 50-60 Ah. These are indicative ranges and, on the 208, the case size and the clamp type matter as much as the Ah because the tray is compact. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it from the number plate and fit it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
I only use my 208 to drive into town, 10-minute trips. Is that why the battery keeps dying?
Yes, that’s one of the most common causes. Starting uses a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can’t put it back, so the battery is permanently living at half charge. Over time that causes sulphation on the plates and it loses capacity for good. In Málaga, the heat speeds the process up. Two simple remedies: take a 30-40 minute run every two or three weeks, or hook up a trickle charger if the car sits for days on end. And get the free check done: we’ll tell you whether it has actually lost capacity or is just discharged.
Can I fit a higher-amperage battery to my Peugeot 208?
Within limits, yes: going up slightly in capacity harms nothing, because the car draws what it needs and no more. But the 208’s engine bay is compact and there are three non-negotiable limits: the battery has to fit the space, match the base hold-down and keep the terminal layout. And more important than the amps is the type: if your 208 asks for EFB or AGM, a giant conventional battery is still the wrong choice. With the number plate we’ll tell you how far you can go safely.
Does the e-208 have a 12 V battery?
Yes. Alongside the high-voltage traction battery, the e-208 carries a conventional 12 V battery that powers the lights, the electronics and the on-board systems. If that battery goes flat, the e-208 won’t power up even with plenty of range left. It’s an ordinary battery, we stock it and we change it in about 15 minutes. We don’t touch the traction battery: that’s for the official Peugeot service.
Do the 2012-2019 208 and the 2019-on 208 take the same battery?
No, and it’s a common mistake. The 208 I had entry-level versions without Start-Stop that were happy with a conventional battery of around 50-60 Ah. The 208 II, by contrast, has Start-Stop across the range and needs EFB or AGM, usually with more capacity. If you have a 208 II and someone offers you a battery “like the old 208 used”, they’re selling you something that will degrade within months. Generation, engine and trim decide: that’s why we always confirm with the number plate.
Does my Peugeot 208 need AGM or EFB?
If your 208 has Start-Stop it needs EFB as a minimum, and AGM is a valid upgrade that usually pays off in Málaga because of the heat. The whole 208 II (from 2019) has Start-Stop as standard, so it falls into EFB or AGM. Only the entry-level 208 I (2012-2019) without Start-Stop can take a conventional battery. Never fit a conventional battery to a 208 with Start-Stop and, if yours left the factory with AGM, don’t go down to EFB. With the number plate we confirm it in a minute.
How much does it cost to change a Peugeot 208 battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) a conventional battery costs 85-140 €, an EFB 130-230 € and an AGM 180-280 €, always including fitting. Most Peugeot 208s with Start-Stop fall in the EFB bracket of 130-230 €. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, coding if your Peugeot 208 needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer’s, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
