Which battery does the Peugeot 2008 take?

The 2008 has had two very different generations and that changes everything. The first (2013-2019) was based on the 208 of the time and many entry-level units still came without Start-Stop. The second (from 2019), on the CMP platform, has Start-Stop across virtually the whole range, carries a lot more electronics on board and, in the e-2008 variant, has no conventional starter motor at all.

These are indicative ranges, not fixed part numbers: within the same engine, Peugeot has fitted several sizes depending on year, trim and market. Two rules that never fail: never fit a conventional battery to a 2008 with Start-Stop (it needs EFB or AGM, built for constant stop-start cycling) and you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. The only way to get it right is to check it against the number plate.

To narrow it down, have three details handy: year of registration, engine (PureTech, BlueHDi, Hybrid or e-2008) and whether your car has Start-Stop (if the engine switches itself off at traffic lights, it does).

Signs it is time to replace it

The 2008 gives you warning before it strands you, especially the second generation, which keeps a close eye on its battery:

• Start-Stop stops working. This is the earliest sign and the most ignored one: when the battery drops below a certain state of charge, the car disables Start-Stop to protect itself and the engine no longer switches off at traffic lights. It’s rarely a system fault; it’s almost always the battery asking to be replaced.
• Sluggish cold starts, especially on the BlueHDi engines, which also have to power the glow plugs before cranking.
• The touchscreen or the i-Cockpit reboots when you start, or you lose radio stations, the clock and your driving settings.
• Multiple nonsensical error messages on the dash (driver aids, tyre pressure, headlights) coming and going: the 2008’s electronics are very sensitive to the voltage drop when cranking.
• On the e-2008, the car won’t power up even though the traction battery is charged. That points straight at the 12 V auxiliary.

Then add the Málaga factor: here the enemy isn’t the cold, it’s the heat. A 2008 that sleeps in the sun and does short trips with the air conditioning at full blast ages its battery much faster. Real service life is around 4-6 years for conventional and EFB and 5-7 years for AGM. From the fourth year on, have it checked free once a year.
