The Peugeot range runs 12 V batteries, from a conventional 60 Ah on entry-level city cars to EFB and AGM of 60-80 Ah on the PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel with Start-Stop; the electric e-208 and e-2008 also carry a 12 V auxiliary battery. On many modern Peugeots (CMP and EMP2 platforms) the new battery has to be coded through the OBD port so the car charges it correctly. Peugeot is one of the most common brands on Málaga's roads, from the 208 and 2008 that fill the centre to the 308 and 3008 family cars, and we replace batteries for all of them every week. The brand's key point is twofold: almost the whole modern range with Start-Stop needs EFB or AGM —never a cheap conventional one— and, on many Stellantis models, the new battery has to be coded through the OBD port so the ECU recognises it and charges it correctly. Which battery does a Peugeot take?
Peugeot splits its range across two Stellantis group platforms: CMP on the small cars and compact SUVs (208, 2008) and EMP2 on the compacts and mid-size SUVs (308, 3008, 508). The PureTech petrols and BlueHDi diesels with Start-Stop take EFB or AGM, and on many of them the new battery must be coded through the OBD port after fitting. The electric e-208 and e-2008 use a high-voltage traction battery to move the car and a 12 V auxiliary battery that powers the ignition and the electronics: if that 12 V dies, the car won't power up even if the traction battery is charged. Signs it's time to replace it
- Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop stops engaging, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on Peugeots with Start-Stop.
- A battery warning light or an electrical fault message on the instrument display.
- Intermittent glitches on the touchscreen, the i-Cockpit or the audio system.
- A recently fitted battery that was never coded via OBD: the ECU keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- On an e-208 or e-2008, the car won't power up or show “READY” even though the traction battery is charged: it's usually the 12 V auxiliary.

Does a new battery need coding on a Peugeot?
On most modern Peugeots with Start-Stop, yes. The ECU keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without coding it through the OBD port, the car charges it as though it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with our diagnostic equipment during the same fitting, at no extra cost.
Which battery do the electric Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 take?
The e-208 and e-2008 move the car with a high-voltage traction battery, but keep a 12 V auxiliary battery that powers the ignition and the electronics. That 12 V doesn't start any engine, but if it dies the car won't power up or show READY even if the traction battery is charged. It's usually an AGM or EFB, and we replace it just like on any Peugeot.
My Peugeot has Start-Stop — can I fit a conventional battery?
No. A Peugeot with Start-Stop needs an EFB or AGM, depending on what it had from the factory. A conventional battery can't cope with the Start-Stop cycling and degrades within a few months; and if it left the factory with AGM, it stays AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.
How long does a Peugeot battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and accelerates plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in northern Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
