Need a battery for your Peugeot 308 in Málaga? The 308 is Peugeot's compact hatchback and, unlike a supermini such as the 208, it asks more of its battery: more on-board electronics, an always-on i-Cockpit display and, on diesel or plug-in hybrid versions, higher standby power draw. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify it from the number plate and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics test and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.

Which battery does the Peugeot 308 take?

The 308 has had three generations and, unlike the 208, the jump to generalised Start-Stop came earlier: the 308 I (T7, 2007-2013) was still sold without Start-Stop across much of the range and was happy with conventional batteries; the 308 II (T9, 2013-2021), already on the EMP2 platform, made Start-Stop standard across the range and raised electrical demands; and the 308 III (P51, from 2021), on the same EMP2 platform, added mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and the fully electric e-308. Fitting a 308 II or III with what worked on a 308 I is an expensive mistake.

These are indicative ranges: Peugeot has fitted several sizes within the same engine depending on year, trim and market, and we're not going to invent a part number for you over the internet. What is firm: if your 308 has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional one, and diesel or highly equipped versions call for AGM outright. You can move up from EFB to AGM; never drop from AGM to EFB. Confirm it with the number plate.

Golden rule

If your Peugeot 308 has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional battery. Diesel and highly equipped versions call for AGM.

You can move up from EFB to AGM. Never go down from AGM to EFB.

How to find out which one is yours

Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Give us the number plate —from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we'll confirm the type, the size and the final fitted price for your 308's battery.

Want an idea first? Use the "which battery do I need?" test. And if what you want to know is whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes, no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just a voltage reading.

Three details help narrow it down: year, engine (VTi, PureTech, BlueHDi, Hybrid or e-308) and whether the engine switches itself off at traffic lights (that's Start-Stop, and it changes the battery type).

Signs it is time to replace it

The 308 has a very recognisable failure pattern, and it's almost always tied to city use and its electronics:

  • It won't start after a few days parked. A classic when the car is only used at weekends or left in the garage over the holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest —and the 308 has plenty— and, if the battery is already old, it doesn't make it.
  • Lazy starts in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery that's short on charge: in the morning it's cold and flat; after some driving, the alternator has put back just enough.
  • Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The 308 disables it on its own when the battery isn't at the required state of charge. It's not a system quirk: it's a warning.
  • The i-Cockpit screen reboots or loses the clock when you switch on the ignition.
  • Locks and windows are slow, or the car takes a while to "wake up" when you unlock it.
  • On a 308 Hybrid or PHEV, the car won't power up even though the range display shows plenty of charge: it's the 12 V auxiliary battery that has failed, not the traction one.

And here's the nuance almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. A 308 doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes a recharge —starting uses a lot and the alternator doesn't have time to put it back— so the battery lives chronically half charged. That causes sulphation and shortens its life. Add Málaga's heat and the higher electrical load of a compact car —screens, diesel, plug-in versions— and you can see why an urban 308 often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). If that's your case, a 30-40 minute run every now and then, or a trickle charger, makes a real difference.

How much it costs in Málaga

The price ranges we work with, fitting included:

  • Conventional: 85-140 €. The typical case for an entry-level 308 I without Start-Stop: it's the cheapest 308 to keep running on this front.
  • EFB: 130-230 €. What almost any 308 with Start-Stop needs, including the petrol 308 II/III PureTech.
  • AGM: 180-280 €. For the BlueHDi diesel, highly equipped versions, or if your 308 sleeps out in the sun and you want maximum headroom.
  • Premium AGM: 280-380 €. For the 2.0 BlueHDi, the plug-in Hybrid 180/225 or high-end AGM versions that need maximum energy reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Which battery does the Peugeot 308 take?

The Peugeot 308 takes a 12 V battery of between 50 and 80 Ah and 480-800 A of cranking current, depending on the version. The Start-Stop-free 308 I (2007-2013) is happy with a conventional battery of 60-70 Ah; the 308 II/III (from 2013, Start-Stop as standard) needs an EFB of 60-70 Ah; the BlueHDi diesel goes up to 70-80 Ah and up to 800 A and usually calls for AGM; the Hybrid 136, Hybrid 180/225 and e-308 versions use a battery or auxiliary battery of 12 V, 50-70 Ah, normally EFB or AGM. These are indicative ranges: at Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it from the number plate and fit it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.

I only use my 308 for short trips around town. Is that why the battery keeps dying?

Yes, that's one of the most common causes. Starting uses a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can't put it back, so the battery is permanently living at half charge. Over time that causes sulphation on the plates and it loses capacity for good. In Málaga, the heat speeds the process up, and the 308 —with more electronics than a supermini— feels it sooner. Two simple remedies: take a 30-40 minute run every two or three weeks, or hook up a trickle charger if the car sits for days on end. And get the free check done: we'll tell you whether it has actually lost capacity or is just discharged.

Can I fit a higher-amperage battery to my Peugeot 308?

Within limits, yes: going up slightly in capacity harms nothing, because the car draws what it needs and no more. But there are three non-negotiable limits: the battery has to fit the 308's space, match the base hold-down and keep the terminal layout. And more important than the amps is the type: if your 308 asks for EFB or AGM, a giant conventional battery is still the wrong choice. With the number plate we'll tell you how far you can go safely.

Does the Peugeot 308 Hybrid or the e-308 have a 12 V battery?

Yes. Alongside the high-voltage traction battery, the 308 Hybrid, the Hybrid PHEV and the e-308 carry a 12 V auxiliary battery that powers the lights, the electronics and the on-board systems. If that 12 V battery goes flat, the car won't power up even though the range display shows plenty of charge in the traction battery. It's an ordinary battery, we stock it and we change it in about 15 minutes. We don't touch the traction battery: that's for the official Peugeot service.

Do the 308 I, 308 II and 308 III take the same battery? Does the diesel need more?

No, and it's a common mistake. The 308 I (2007-2013) had versions without Start-Stop that were happy with a conventional battery of 60-70 Ah. The 308 II (2013-2021) and the 308 III (from 2021) have Start-Stop across the range and need EFB or AGM, usually with more capacity. And yes, the BlueHDi diesel needs more: it goes up to 70-80 Ah and 720-800 A, and on the 2.0 BlueHDi a Premium AGM is now the norm. Generation, engine and trim decide: that's why we always confirm with the number plate.

Does my Peugeot 308 need AGM or EFB?

If your 308 has Start-Stop it needs EFB as a minimum, and AGM is the recommended option, especially on diesel, on highly equipped versions and in Málaga because of the heat. The whole 308 II and 308 III have Start-Stop as standard, so they fall into EFB or AGM; diesel and the most demanding versions go straight to AGM or Premium AGM. Only the entry-level 308 I (2007-2013) without Start-Stop can take a conventional battery. Never fit a conventional battery to a 308 with Start-Stop and, if yours left the factory with AGM, don't go down to EFB. With the number plate we confirm it in a minute.

How much does it cost to change a Peugeot 308 battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) a conventional battery costs 85-140 €, an EFB 130-230 €, an AGM 180-280 € and a Premium AGM (2.0 BlueHDi, plug-in Hybrid 180/225 or high-end versions) 280-380 €, always including fitting. Most Peugeot 308s with Start-Stop fall in the EFB bracket of 130-230 €, and diesel or highly equipped versions move up to AGM. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, coding if your Peugeot 308 needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer's, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
