The Seat Ibiza battery is 12 V and is around 55-70 Ah and 480-760 A depending on the engine: a conventional 55-60 Ah battery on the 1.0 MPI and 60-70 Ah on the Ibiza 6J and 6L without Start-Stop, an EFB of 60-70 Ah on the 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI EVO and 1.6 TDI with Start-Stop, and AGM on versions that left the factory with it. On Ibizas with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery must be registered in the ECU. A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal. If there's a sensor with a connector coming out of it (the battery state sensor), your Ibiza manages charging actively and needs an EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery with the ECU. And if your car left the factory with AGM, it stays AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it's time to replace it
- Slow cranking from cold on the TSI, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop doesn't engage, or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Ibizas.
- A permanent dashboard message saying the Start-Stop conditions aren't met.
- Intermittent glitches on the screen or the audio system.
- A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU: the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an AGM 5-7.

Does a new battery need coding on a Seat Ibiza?
On Ibizas with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes. The energy management system keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as though it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with our diagnostic equipment during the same fitting, at no extra cost.
My Ibiza came with AGM — can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM, it's because the car has a level of electrical load and cycling that an EFB can't cope with. Saving sixty euros there usually costs you the following year.
What if my Ibiza is an older 6J without Start-Stop?
Then a conventional battery of around 60-70 Ah is all you need, with no coding and no complications. It's one of the quickest jobs we do: test, fit and back on the road in about 15 minutes.
How long does an Ibiza battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and accelerates plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in northern Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
