A Seat uses a 12 V battery and, depending on the model and engine, it is a conventional 55-70 Ah unit on entry-level or older Seats without Stop-Start, an EFB of 60-70 Ah on most TSI petrol and TDI diesel models with Stop-Start, and AGM on the best-equipped versions and the León e-Hybrid. Like the whole VAG group, modern Seats have a sensor on the negative terminal, so the new battery has to be registered in the car's ECU. What battery does a Seat take?
Seat shares platforms and mechanicals with the rest of the VAG group (Volkswagen, Škoda, Cupra), so the rule is the same across the range: models with Stop-Start use EFB or AGM —never conventional— and a battery sensor on the negative terminal that means the new battery must be registered in the ECU. If it is not registered, the car charges it as if it were the old one and it lasts half as long. These are the models we change most (values are a guide, all 12 V):

A quick trick to know which one you need: look at the negative terminal. If it has a sensor with a connector coming out of it, your Seat manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if your car came from the factory with AGM, you must keep AGM: you can go up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it's time to change it
- Slow cold starts, especially first thing in the morning.
- Stop-Start doesn't engage, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Seats.
- A permanent message on the dash saying the Stop-Start conditions are not met.
- Intermittent faults on the screen, the audio system or the electronics.
- Battery changed recently but not registered in the ECU: the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- On a León e-Hybrid or other hybrid, the car won't switch on even though the traction battery is charged: it is usually the 12 V auxiliary.

Does the battery need registering or coding when changed on a Seat?
On Seats with Stop-Start and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes. The energy management system stores the battery's history and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car treats it as if it were the old one, charges it badly and halves its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same job and at no extra cost.
My Seat came with AGM, can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If your Seat left the factory with AGM it is because its power demand and the Stop-Start cycling would ruin an EFB. Saving a few euros there usually turns out expensive the following year. You can go up from EFB to AGM.
What battery does a Seat León e-Hybrid or hybrid take?
On a Seat León e-Hybrid the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers the ignition and the electronics, but it does not start the engine or move the car, that is the job of the high-voltage battery. It is usually AGM or EFB and it has to be registered too. If that 12 V battery goes flat, the car will not switch on even if the traction battery is charged.
How long does a Seat battery last in Málaga?
Four to six years for a conventional battery and five to seven for an EFB or AGM. The heat of the Málaga coast evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last on average less than in northern Spain.
