A Škoda uses a 12 V battery, and the technology depends on whether the model has Start-Stop: conventional on entry trims without Start-Stop, EFB on the Fabia, Octavia, Kamiq and Karoq with Start-Stop, and AGM on the higher-spec versions that left the factory that way. Like the whole VAG Group range, modern Škodas have a sensor on the negative terminal and the new battery must be registered in the ECU. What battery does a Škoda use?

A quick way to know what you need: look at the negative terminal. If it has a sensor with a connector coming off it, your Škoda actively manages charging and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if your car came with AGM from the factory, it must keep AGM: you can go up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it is time to change it
- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing on damp mornings.
- Start-Stop stops kicking in, or it does and the engine restarts by itself after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Škodas.
- A message on the dash that the Start-Stop conditions are not met.

My Škoda came with AGM, can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it came with AGM from the factory it is because the car has a level of electrical demand and cycling that an EFB cannot handle. Saving a few euros there tends to cost you dearly the following year.
How long does a Škoda battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than inland. If yours is over four years old, come in for the free test.
