The Volkswagen range runs on 12 V batteries, and the technology depends on whether the car has Start-Stop: conventional on older models and entry 1.0 MPI without Start-Stop, EFB on most TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines with Start-Stop, and AGM on higher-spec versions and on the plug-in GTE and eHybrid, where the 12 V is an auxiliary battery. Which battery does a Volkswagen take?
The VAG group's particularity is its energy management system with a sensor on the negative terminal: the new battery is registered with the ECU so the car charges it correctly. A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal. If there's a sensor with a connector coming out of it, your Volkswagen manages charging actively and needs an EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery with the ECU. And if your car left the factory with AGM, it stays AGM.

Signs it's time to replace it
- Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop doesn't engage, or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Volkswagens.
- A permanent dashboard message saying the Start-Stop conditions aren't met.
- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the audio system or the driver-assistance systems.
- A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU: the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- On a Golf GTE or eHybrid, the car won't switch on even though the traction battery is charged: usually the 12 V auxiliary.

Does the battery need registering when you change it on a Volkswagen?
On Volkswagens with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes. The VAG group's energy management system keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as though it were the old one and halves its life. We do it with our diagnostic equipment during the same fitting, at no extra cost.
My Volkswagen came with AGM — can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM, it's because the car has a level of electrical load and cycling that an EFB can't cope with. Saving a few euros there usually costs you the following year.
My Golf GTE or eHybrid won't switch on — is it the battery?
It may well be. On plug-in Volkswagen hybrids the 12 V is an auxiliary battery: it powers the electronics and lets you switch on, but it doesn't move the car, which starts on the high-voltage battery. If that 12 V runs flat, the car won't switch on or go to ready even though the traction battery is charged. Bring it in and we'll check it free of charge with your number plate.
How long does a Volkswagen battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and accelerates plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in northern Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
