Need a battery for your Volkswagen T-Roc in Málaga? The T-Roc (MQB A1 platform, from 2017) has Start-Stop as standard, so it takes EFB or AGM and —this is the key part— the new battery has to be registered in the energy manager. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify it from the number plate, change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment and register it via OBD-II so the charging system treats it properly. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics test and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.

Key facts

  • Typical capacity: 60-80 Ah and 600-800 A of cranking current, depending on the version.
  • Type: always Start-Stop, so EFB or AGM; never conventional.
  • Registration is mandatory: after the change, the battery (capacity and EFB/AGM type) has to be coded into the manager via OBD-II.
  • Price with fitting: EFB 130-230 €, AGM 180-280 €, premium AGM 280-380 € on highly equipped versions; a conventional one 85-140 € does not apply to the T-Roc.
  • Real service life in Málaga: 4-6 years for EFB, 5-7 years for AGM.
  • Where: Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. Fitted in about 15 minutes, no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999.

Which battery does the Volkswagen T-Roc take?

The T-Roc launched in 2017 on the Volkswagen Group's MQB A1 platform and, like the whole group, has Start-Stop as standard: that means EFB or AGM, never a conventional battery. The 2022 facelift doesn't change this rule, and neither do the T-Roc R or the discontinued T-Roc Cabriolet: they all run a smart-managed battery. What really sets the T-Roc apart from a car with no energy management is that, when you change the battery, it must be registered in the manager (BEM/BMS) via OBD-II.

T-Roc 1.5 TSI 150 (ACT) Start-StopYesEFB (AGM as an upgrade)68-72 Ah / 680-720 A
T-Roc 2.0 TSI 190 / 300 (R) Start-StopYesAGM68-80 Ah / 720-800 A
T-Roc 1.6 TDI 115 / 2.0 TDI 115/150 Start-StopYesEFB or AGM70-80 Ah / 720-760 A

These are indicative ranges: Volkswagen fits several sizes within the same engine depending on year, trim and market, and we're not going to invent a part number for you over the internet. What is firm: if it left the factory with AGM, keep AGM (never drop to EFB), and the type and capacity must be registered in the manager. Confirm it with the number plate.

Golden rule

On the VW T-Roc, fitting the battery isn't enough: it must be registered in the energy manager via OBD-II. Without registration, charging goes out of control and the new battery lasts a short time.

EFB or AGM depending on the version; if it came with AGM, keep AGM.

How to find out which one is yours

Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Give us the number plate —from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we'll confirm the type (EFB or AGM), the size and the final fitted-and-registered price for your T-Roc's battery.

Want an idea first? Use the "which battery do I need?" test. And if what you want to know is whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes, no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just a voltage reading.

Three details help narrow it down: year (before or after the 2022 facelift), engine (1.0/1.5/2.0 TSI, 1.6/2.0 TDI or T-Roc R) and whether it left the factory with EFB or AGM (this sets the type to be registered).

Signs it is time to replace it

The T-Roc warns you in a fairly recognisable way, almost always through the energy management system:

  • Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The T-Roc disables it on its own when the battery isn't at the required state of charge. It's not a quirk: it's a warning.
  • A Start-Stop system message or warning light appears in the instrument cluster.
  • Lazy starts in the morning and normal in the afternoon: a battery short on charge.
  • Windows and comfort functions are slow, or the car takes a while to "wake up" when you unlock it.
  • The infotainment reboots or loses settings when you switch on the ignition.

And here's the nuance almost nobody tells you on a VW: if the battery was changed and not registered in the manager, the car keeps charging with the old battery's strategy. You'll notice erratic Start-Stop, and the new battery gets overcharged or chronically undercharged and lasts a short time. Add Málaga's heat —which speeds up degradation— and a poorly managed battery falls well short of the 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM) it should last. That's why registration isn't optional.

How much it costs in Málaga

The price ranges we work with, fitting and OBD-II registration included:

  • EFB: 130-230 €. What most T-Rocs need: 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI and a good share of the TDIs.
  • AGM: 180-280 €. For the 2.0 TSI, the better-equipped TDIs or if your T-Roc left the factory with AGM (don't drop to EFB).
  • Premium AGM: 280-380 €. Highly equipped versions, the T-Roc R and anyone after top-tier AGM and maximum durability.
  • Conventional (85-140 €): does not apply to the T-Roc. With Start-Stop as standard, it never takes a conventional battery.

Frequently asked questions

Which battery does the Volkswagen T-Roc take?

The Volkswagen T-Roc takes a 12 V battery of between 60 and 80 Ah and 600-800 A of cranking current, depending on the version. Built on the MQB A1 platform with Start-Stop as standard, it always takes EFB or AGM, never a conventional one: the 1.0 TSI 110 is around 60-70 Ah in EFB; the 1.5 TSI 150 (ACT), 68-72 Ah; the 2.0 TSI 190 and the T-Roc R (300), 68-80 Ah in AGM; and the TDIs, 70-80 Ah in EFB or AGM. If it left the factory with AGM, keep AGM. And there's a VW-specific detail: when you change it, it must be registered in the energy manager via OBD-II. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it from the number plate and change and register it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.

Does the T-Roc battery have to be registered or coded when you change it?

Yes. The T-Roc has an energy manager (the VW-VAG group's BEM/BMS) that controls the alternator's charging based on the battery. When you fit a new battery, it must be registered via OBD-II, stating its capacity and its type (EFB or AGM) so the car treats it as what it is. It's a quick step we always do in the shop with the diagnostic tool. Without that registration, the smart charging management keeps working with the old battery's data and treats it poorly.

What happens if the new battery isn't registered?

The car keeps charging with the previous battery's strategy. If you fitted a new battery and it wasn't registered, the alternator may overcharge it or leave it chronically undercharged: either way the battery ages fast and lasts far less than it should. On top of that, Start-Stop behaves erratically, because the manager has no coherent state-of-charge data. In Málaga, with the heat, a poorly managed battery degrades even sooner. That's why registering the battery isn't optional on a T-Roc.

Can I fit a conventional battery to the T-Roc?

No. The T-Roc has Start-Stop as standard across the range, so it needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional battery. A conventional one can't cope with Start-Stop's constant starting cycles and would degrade within a few months; besides, the energy manager expects an EFB or AGM battery registered as such. If it came with AGM from the factory, keep AGM: don't drop to EFB. With the number plate we'll confirm the exact type that suits yours.

EFB or AGM for my T-Roc?

It depends on the version, and the rule is simple: if your T-Roc left the factory with AGM, keep AGM (don't drop to EFB); if it came with EFB, you can stay on EFB or move up to AGM as an upgrade. In general the 1.0 TSI and the 1.5 TSI are well covered by EFB, while the 2.0 TSI, the T-Roc R and highly equipped versions call for AGM. In Málaga, because of the heat, AGM usually pays off. Whichever it is, we register it in the manager with its type. With the number plate we confirm it in a minute.

Start-Stop no longer works well after changing the battery, why?

The most likely reason is that the new battery wasn't registered in the energy manager. The T-Roc only activates Start-Stop when it detects a sufficient state of charge; if the manager is still using the old battery's data, it miscalculates and disables Start-Stop or triggers it erratically. The fix is to register the battery via OBD-II with its capacity and type (EFB or AGM). If it was changed elsewhere without being registered, bring it in: we check it and register it on the spot.

How much does it cost to change a Volkswagen T-Roc battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) an EFB battery costs 130-230 €, an AGM 180-280 € and a premium AGM 280-380 € on highly equipped versions, always including fitting. Most T-Rocs fall in the EFB bracket of 130-230 €. A conventional battery (85-140 €) doesn't apply, because the T-Roc always has Start-Stop. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, registration of the battery in the manager via OBD-II and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer's, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
