Which battery does the Nissan Qashqai take?
With the Qashqai, the first job is pinning down the generation, because a J10 (2007-2013), a J11 (2013-2021) and a J12 (from 2021) are three electrically different cars. The J10 is simple and mostly has no Start-Stop. The J11 made it standard and that’s where EFB begins. And the J12 adds the 12 V mild hybrid and, above all, e-Power, which works in a way worth understanding before touching anything.
| Version | Start-Stop | Recommended type | Indicative capacity / cranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qashqai J10 (2007-2013) 1.6 / 2.0 petrol, mostly without Start-Stop | No | Conventional | 60-70 Ah / 540-640 A |
| Qashqai J10 (2007-2013) 1.5 / 2.0 dCi | Depends on version | Conventional (EFB if it has Start-Stop) | 70-74 Ah / 640-680 A |
| Qashqai J11 (2013-2021) 1.2 / 1.6 DIG-T Start-Stop | Yes | EFB (AGM as an upgrade) | 60-70 Ah / 600-680 A |
| Qashqai J11 (2013-2021) 1.5 / 1.6 dCi Start-Stop | Yes | EFB or AGM | 70-75 Ah / 680-760 A |
| Qashqai J12 (2021-) 1.3 DIG-T 12 V mild hybrid | Yes | EFB or AGM | Around 70 Ah / 680-760 A |
| Qashqai J12 e-Power (2022-) | — | AGM or EFB (12 V service battery) | 60-70 Ah / 600-680 A |
As always, these are indicative ranges, not fixed part numbers: Nissan varied sizes by year, engine and market. Two warnings specific to the Qashqai. First: the dCi diesels need more cranking amps (CCA) than the equivalent petrols, because a diesel has to overcome more compression and also power the glow plugs; going below the homologated figure is the recipe for being stranded on the first cool morning. Second: if your Qashqai came with AGM, don’t drop to EFB —the other way round is fine, moving from EFB to AGM is an upgrade—. And never a conventional battery in a Qashqai with Start-Stop. Confirm it with the number plate.
Golden rule
If your Nissan Qashqai has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional battery.
You can move up from EFB to AGM. Never go down from AGM to EFB.
How to find out which one is yours
The quick, safe way: give us the number plate from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18. That tells us the generation, the engine and whether your Qashqai has Start-Stop, and we give you the type, capacity and final fitted price.
If you want to get your bearings first, there’s the “which battery do I need?” test. And if your question is “will it last or not?”, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics equipment measures real charge and health in 5 minutes, free and with no obligation. On a diesel this matters more than it seems: a battery can read 12.6 V at rest and still not have enough CCA to turn a cold dCi.
Useful details to have handy: year, engine (DIG-T, dCi, mild hybrid or e-Power) and whether the engine switches itself off at traffic lights.

Signs it is time to replace it
The signs vary quite a bit depending on which Qashqai you have:
- dCi diesel (J10 and J11): long, laboured cold starts. The engine cranks slowly, takes a while to catch, and in the morning you notice it struggles more than in the afternoon. It’s the classic warning on a diesel Qashqai, and it shows up earlier in winter because the glow plugs draw current right before cranking.
- J11 and J12: Start-Stop stops working and sometimes a message appears on the dash. The car disables it by itself to protect a battery that no longer reaches the required state of charge.
- “Phantom” electronic faults: the 360° camera, ProPILOT or the screen reboot or throw intermittent errors. The Qashqai carries a lot of driver aids and they all complain when voltage drops.
- e-Power: the car won’t go into READY even though it has fuel and everything looks fine. See the first FAQ: the 12 V is almost always to blame.
- After a weekend parked, the central locking responds slowly or the car takes a while to wake up.
The Qashqai is a family SUV that in Málaga gets used a lot for coast runs and long trips, and that’s deceptive: long journeys keep the battery well charged and mask its wear, until one August day, with the car sitting in the sun, it won’t start. Real service life here is 4-6 years for conventional and EFB and 5-7 years for AGM.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery does the Nissan Qashqai take?
The Nissan Qashqai takes a 12 V battery of between 60 and 75 Ah and 540-760 A of cranking current, depending on the generation and the engine. The Qashqai J10 (2007-2013), mostly without Start-Stop, takes a conventional battery of 60-74 Ah; the J11 (2013-2021) with Start-Stop needs EFB or AGM of 60-75 Ah; the J12 (from 2021), with its 12 V mild hybrid, calls for EFB or AGM of around 70 Ah; and the J12 e-Power uses a 12 V service battery of 60-70 Ah. The dCi diesels demand more cold cranking amps (CCA) than the equivalent petrol engines. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we identify it from the number plate and fit it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
My Qashqai e-Power won’t start. Can it be the 12 V battery if the hybrid one is fine?
Yes, and it’s the most likely cause. The e-Power is a series hybrid: the petrol engine doesn’t drive the wheels, it works as a generator, and the car is always propelled by the electric motor. That means there’s no conventional starter motor cranking the combustion engine. What there is, is a 12 V battery that powers all the electronics and lets the car “wake up” and go into READY mode. If that 12 V battery goes flat, the Qashqai e-Power won’t start even with a perfect hybrid system and a full tank. It’s an ordinary 12 V battery: we test it and change it in the shop in about 15 minutes.
Does the diesel Qashqai need more amps than the petrol?
Yes. A dCi has to overcome far higher compression and also powers the glow plug system right before starting, so it demands more cold cranking amps (CCA). That’s why dCi models leave the factory with more capacity and more amps than an equivalent DIG-T. Never go below the homologated CCA to save a few euros: the battery will seem fine in summer and will strand you on the first cool morning. With the number plate we’ll tell you the right CCA for your engine.
My Qashqai came with AGM from the factory. Can I fit an EFB and save money?
It’s not a good idea. AGM is superior to EFB in cycling resistance, charge acceptance and heat tolerance, and if your Qashqai left the factory with AGM it’s because its charging management and its electrical load are calculated for it. Fitting an EFB instead is a downgrade: it will last considerably less and the car may not charge it properly. The other way round does work: if yours has EFB, moving up to AGM is a legitimate upgrade and in Málaga it usually pays off because of the heat.
How long does a Qashqai battery last in Málaga and when should I have it checked?
Realistically, 4-6 years for conventional and EFB and 5-7 years for AGM. Heat is the dominant factor: it evaporates the electrolyte and speeds up wear. Something curious happens with the Qashqai: because it’s used a lot for long trips and runs down to the coast, the battery stays well charged and hides its age, until one summer day it won’t start. So from the fourth year on, have the free check done once a year — better before summer than after.
How much does it cost to change a Nissan Qashqai battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) a conventional battery costs 85-140 €, an EFB 130-230 € and an AGM 180-280 €, always including fitting. Most Nissan Qashqais with Start-Stop fall in the EFB bracket of 130-230 €. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, coding if your Nissan Qashqai needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer’s, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
