The MG ZS 12 V battery is around 45-70 Ah and 480-680 A depending on the version: a conventional 55-65 Ah battery on the 1.5 VTi-Tech, an EFB of 60-70 Ah on the 1.0 T-GDI with Start-Stop, and a 45-60 Ah auxiliary battery (EFB or AGM) on the ZS Hybrid+ and the electric ZS EV. On the Hybrid+ and the EV that 12 V battery does not move the car, but it is the one that switches it on: if it goes flat, the ZS will not go to READY even with the traction battery at 100%. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we check it free of charge and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes. Guideline prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.
The MG ZS was the surprise of 2025: Spain's third best-selling car and the first Chinese model ever to make the podium. Málaga is full of them, especially in Hybrid+ and electric form. And with them comes a new question at the counter: "if my car is electric, why do I need to change the battery?". Because the ZS, like every car, has a separate 12 V battery, and that's the one that decides whether the car switches on at all. We test it free and replace it without an appointment at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.
Which battery does the MG ZS take?
Indicative figures. On every version we're talking about the 12 V battery, the electric one included:
| Version | Approx. Ah | Cranking (A) | Technology | Start-Stop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 VTi-Tech (naturally aspirated petrol) | 55-65 Ah | 480-560 A | Conventional | No |
| 1.0 T-GDI (turbo petrol, with Start-Stop) | 60-70 Ah | 580-680 A | EFB | Yes |
| ZS Hybrid+ | 45-60 Ah | — | EFB or AGM | — |
| ZS EV (fully electric) | 45-60 Ah | — | EFB or AGM | — |
Guideline figures: they vary with year, trim and equipment. “—” = we confirm it from your number plate.
On the Hybrid+ and the EV, the 12 V battery doesn't crank any engine, but it powers all the electronics and is what allows the system to connect the traction battery. If it goes flat, the car won't switch on even with the traction battery showing 100 %. It is by far the most common failure on an electric car.
On top of that, many ZS units use Asian-type terminals, thinner than European ones, and cases with their own dimensions. The Ah figure can match and the battery still won't sit properly in the tray or clamp properly on the posts. That's why, with the ZS more than any other car on this list, you need to confirm with the number plate before buying anything.

Give us the number plate on WhatsApp or at the shop and we'll tell you the capacity, cranking current, technology, terminal type and exact dimensions. On the Hybrid+ and the EV the 12 V battery sits under the bonnet just like on a combustion car, and its label shows the Ah and CCA. If you'd rather be sure before spending anything, get a free battery check: on an electric ZS the 12 V test works exactly as on any other car.

Signs it's time to replace it
- The car won't go to READY or is completely dead after a few days parked: the classic symptom of a lightly used ZS EV.
- Strange, simultaneous electrical faults: central locking, screen, reversing camera and sensors all playing up at once.
- The touchscreen reboots on its own or takes forever to come on.
- On the 1.0 T-GDI, Start-Stop stops engaging.
- Several error messages on the dash that disappear after charging the battery: when the 12 V drops in voltage, every control unit starts complaining at once.
- More than 4 years old, or 3 if the car spends weeks unused.
One important detail about the electric version: on the ZS EV the 12 V battery is recharged from the traction battery through a converter, but only while the car is switched on or charging. Leave it parked for weeks and it drains just like any other car's.

For the Hybrid+ and the EV we always ask for the number plate before quoting a firm price, because case format and terminal type vary far more than on a European car. Battery change without an appointment in Málaga
You'll find us at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga, no booking needed. We run the free Midtronics test, and if the battery needs changing we fit it in about 15 minutes. On the ZS EV and Hybrid+ we only touch the 12 V circuit: the high-voltage traction battery is never handled. Everything is done at the shop; we don't offer mobile fitting. Have a look at our car batteries in Málaga as well. We're right next to Teatinos and about fifteen minutes from Torremolinos along the coast.
MG ZS battery FAQs
What battery does the MG ZS take and how many amps does it need?
These are guideline figures: confirm them free of charge with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.
How much does it cost to change a MG ZS battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a MG ZS battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with an EFB and 180-280 € with an AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test and the recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set out in Spanish RDL 7/2021. We have been an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve customers without an appointment.
My MG ZS is electric — does it still have a 12 V battery?
Yes, and it's the one that causes the most trouble. The traction battery moves the car; the 12 V battery powers the electronics and lets the system connect the traction battery. If the 12 V dies, the ZS EV won't switch on even if it shows 100 % charge. Most of the "broken electric cars" we see are simply a flat 12 V battery.
Can I jump-start an MG ZS EV?
You can jump the 12 V battery with ordinary jump leads to get the car to switch on, respecting polarity and with the other vehicle switched off. What you never do is try to feed current to the traction battery or charge the 12 V from it: the car's own system handles that. And if you need a jump more than once, the battery is already due for replacement.
Will any battery fit the MG ZS?
No. Many versions use Asian-type terminals, thinner than European ones, and cases with their own dimensions. The Ah figure can match and the battery still won't sit properly in the tray or clamp on the posts. Give us the number plate and we'll tell you exactly which one it takes.
My ZS sits parked for weeks at a time — does that hurt it?
Quite a lot. With the car switched off the 12 V battery isn't recharged and keeps feeding standby loads such as the alarm and telematics. A ZS that spends weeks parked can drop below the voltage threshold at 3 years instead of 5. If you use it rarely, come by for the free test once a year.
