The service battery in an MG is a 12 V unit: in the electric MGs (MG4, ZS EV) and in the EHS plug-in it is an auxiliary AGM or EFB battery that switches on the electronics and powers the ignition —it does not start the car, that is handled by the high-voltage battery—, while the petrol MG ZS and HS with Start-Stop use a 12 V EFB of around 60-70 Ah. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it for free and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes, with coding included. Guide prices with fitting: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Your MG won't start or won't go READY? Today and without an appointmentSend us your number plate on WhatsApp and we'll tell you the exact battery for your MG and the price in minutes.

MG has taken over the streets of Málaga in a very short time, above all with the MG ZS and the wave of electrics and plug-in hybrids (MG4, ZS EV, EHS). And that is the key point: in an electric or plug-in MG the battery we usually replace is the 12 V auxiliary one, not the traction battery. It is small but critical: if it runs flat, the car won't switch on or go READY even when the big battery is full. We sort it out on the spot, without an appointment and with coding included, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. We work in the shop: we do not offer home fitting.

Which battery does an MG take?

MG belongs to the SAIC group and has a range heavily geared towards electric and plug-in cars. That changes the type of 12 V battery depending on the version, so it is worth telling them apart. Guide values, all 12 V:

ModelTypical technologyStart-StopNote
MG ZS (petrol)EFB 60-70 AhYesReset the energy system when replacing
MG HS (petrol / EHS PHEV)12 V EFB (auxiliary on the EHS)YesOn the EHS plug-in, the 12 V is auxiliary
MG ZS EVAuxiliary 12 V AGM or EFBDoesn't start; provides ignition and READY
MG4 (fully electric)Auxiliary 12 V AGM or EFBAuxiliary; if flat, no READY
MG3 (petrol / hybrid)Conventional or EFBDepends on versionConfirm it with the number plate

Guide values: they change with the year, trim and equipment. «—» = data we confirm with your number plate.

The quirk with MG is in its electrics and plug-ins: the 12 V is an auxiliary or service battery (AGM or EFB) that switches on the ignition, wakes up the screen and lets the car go to READY, but it does not start any engine —moving the car is the job of the high-voltage battery, which is a different thing—. On the petrol MG ZS and HS with Start-Stop the 12 V is an EFB: if it left the factory with EFB or AGM, you must keep that technology. You can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Slow cranking when cold on the petrol MGs, especially first thing in the morning.
  • Start-Stop won't engage on the ZS or the HS, or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds.
  • Your electric MG won't switch on or go READY even though the traction battery is charged: it is almost always the 12 V auxiliary one.
  • Intermittent faults on the screen, the multimedia system or the dashboard warnings.
  • Battery replaced recently but without resetting the energy system: the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
  • More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7.

Frequently asked questions about the battery of an MG

Which battery does an MG take?

The 12 V battery of an MG depends on the engine. In the electric MGs (MG4, ZS EV) and in the MG EHS plug-in it is a 12 V auxiliary battery, usually AGM or EFB, that provides ignition and powers the electronics but does not start the car: that is done by the high-voltage battery. In the petrol MG ZS and HS with Start-Stop a 12 V EFB of around 60-70 Ah is fitted. These are guide values: confirm them for free with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change the battery of an MG in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing the 12 V battery of an MG costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB and 180-280 € with AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test, the coding and the recycling of the used battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve without an appointment.

Do you have to code the battery when changing it on an MG?

On MGs with Start-Stop it is best to reset the energy management system so it treats the new battery as new and charges it properly; if not, it charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. On electric and plug-in MGs, after changing the 12 V battery you sometimes have to reset a module so the car goes back to READY. We do it with the diagnostic equipment during the same replacement and at no extra cost.

My MG is electric, does the 12 V battery start the car?

No. In an MG4 or a ZS EV the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it provides ignition, wakes up the electronics and lets the car go to READY, but what moves the car is the high-voltage battery. Even so it is essential: if the 12 V goes flat, the MG won't switch on or go READY even when the traction battery is full. It is usually an AGM or EFB.

Where is the 12 V battery on an electric MG?

On most electric and plug-in MGs the 12 V auxiliary battery is in the engine bay, accessible when you open the bonnet, not next to the traction battery. If you are unsure where yours is, tell us the number plate and we'll confirm it before changing it.

How long does the battery of an MG last in Málaga?

From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and from 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up the corrosion of the plates, so batteries here last on average less than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, come by for the free test.
