The Hyundai range runs on a 12 V battery whose technology depends on the model and engine: conventional or EFB on small cars like the i10, EFB or AGM on Hyundais with Start-Stop (i20, i30, Kona, Tucson) and, on 48 V mild-hybrids, a 12 V lead-acid battery (AGM or EFB) separate from the 48 V one. On HEV and PHEV hybrids (Tucson, Kona) the 12 V is auxiliary: it powers the ignition and electronics but does not crank the engine. On Hyundais with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery must be registered in the ECU. Which battery does a Hyundai take?
Hyundai (Hyundai-Kia group) allocates the technology by trim level, all in 12 V. Models with Start-Stop require EFB or AGM, never a conventional battery. On 48 V mild-hybrids there are two batteries: the 48 V one (lithium, not touched in a normal replacement) and a 12 V lead-acid one — AGM or EFB — which cranks and powers the car; that is the one we replace. On HEV and PHEV hybrids (Tucson, Kona) the 12 V is auxiliary: it neither moves the car nor cranks the combustion engine, but if it goes flat the car won’t show “READY” or even ignition even with the high-voltage battery charged. And on Hyundais with a sensor on the negative terminal the new battery should be registered in the ECU so the system charges it correctly; we do that included.

A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal. If there’s a sensor with a connector coming out of it, your Hyundai manages charging actively and needs an EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if it left the factory with AGM, it stays AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it’s time to replace it
- Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop doesn’t engage, or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Hyundais.
- A battery warning light or a dashboard message that the Start-Stop conditions aren’t met.
- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the camera or the audio system.
- A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU: the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- On a Hyundai hybrid, the car won’t show “READY” even with the main battery charged: it’s usually the 12 V auxiliary one.

Does a new battery need registering on a Hyundai?
On Hyundais with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes. The energy management system keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as though it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with our diagnostic equipment during the same fitting, at no extra cost.
My Hyundai is a 48 V mild-hybrid — which battery do you replace?
The 12 V one. A 48 V mild-hybrid has two batteries: the 48 V lithium one, which is part of the hybrid system and is not replaced in a normal job, and a 12 V lead-acid one (AGM or EFB) which cranks the engine and powers the car’s electronics. That 12 V battery is the one that goes flat and the one we replace, with its registration included.
My Hyundai is a hybrid — does the 12 V battery start the car?
No. On a Hyundai HEV or PHEV hybrid, such as the Tucson or Kona, the engine is started by the high-voltage system; the 12 V is auxiliary and only powers the ignition and electronics. But it is essential: if that 12 V goes flat, the car won’t show “READY” or even ignition even with the main battery charged. It is usually an AGM or EFB and it too wears out over the years.
How long does a Hyundai battery last in Málaga?
