What battery does the MG HS take?
The MG HS reached Spain in 2019 and launched its second generation in 2024, with petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (Hybrid+) versions. The whole range has Start-Stop, so the battery is never a conventional one: it needs EFB as a minimum. Signs it's time to replace it
The HS, as a proper city SUV, has a very recognisable failure pattern, almost always linked to urban use:
- After a few days parked it won't start. Classic of the HS used only at weekends or left in the garage during holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it can't cope.
- Sluggish start in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery low on charge: cold and flat in the morning; after driving, the alternator has just about topped it up.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The HS disables it on its own when the battery isn't holding the required charge level. It's not a system quirk: it's a warning.
- The large touchscreen restarts or loses settings when you switch on.
- The powered tailgate, locks and windows are slow or the car is slow to "wake up" when you open it.
And here's the detail almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. An HS doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes the recharge —starting draws a lot and the alternator has no time to replace it—, and the battery lives chronically half-charged. That causes sulphation and shortens its life. Add Málaga's heat and you understand why an urban HS often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). I have an MG HS PHEV / Hybrid+. Which battery do you change, the traction one?
No, the traction battery is not touched. Besides the high-voltage battery that drives the car, the hybrid HS has a 12 V auxiliary battery (EFB or AGM) that powers the ignition, lights and electronics. If that 12 V one runs flat, the HS won't start or even power on, even if the traction battery is charged. That 12 V battery is the one we change, in about 15 minutes. The high-voltage traction battery is for the official MG service.
I only use the HS around town, 10-minute trips. Is that why the battery keeps dying?
Yes, it's one of the most common causes. Starting draws a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can't replace it, so the battery lives permanently half-charged. Over time that causes sulphation on the plates and permanent capacity loss. In Málaga, the heat speeds up the process too. Two simple fixes: take a 30-40 minute drive every two or three weeks, or hook up a trickle charger if the car sits idle for many days. Can I fit a battery with more amps in my MG HS?
Within limits, yes: raising the capacity a little does no harm, because the car draws what it needs and no more. But there are three limits that aren't up for negotiation: the battery has to fit the tray, match the base clamp and respect the terminal layout. And more important than the amps is the type: if your HS needs EFB or AGM, a giant conventional one is still the wrong choice. Does my MG HS need AGM or EFB?
The whole HS range has Start-Stop, so it needs EFB as a minimum. AGM is a valid upgrade that often pays off in Málaga because of the heat, and it's the sensible choice on very well-equipped versions, Trophy, or if the car sleeps in the sun.
