What a Start-Stop battery replacement includes
In our shop the service includes:
- Free battery and alternator check. Before changing anything we test your current battery and the alternator’s charging. If the battery is fine, you don’t change anything.
- The right technology. From your number plate or model we find the exact battery: EFB or AGM, capacity, cold cranking, size and terminal layout.
- Fitting without losing the memory. We connect a memory saver during the swap so the car keeps its radio, window and other settings.
- Registration or coding with the control unit. If your car has a battery management system (BMS), we tell it a new battery has been fitted so it charges it properly and the Start-Stop works again.
- Recycling of the old battery. We keep it and dispose of it in line with the regulations.

Start-Stop battery replacement prices in Málaga
Yes, a Start-Stop battery costs more than a conventional one: it is built to withstand far more starts and partial discharges. These are the price ranges including fitting, registration if needed and recycling of the old battery:
| Technology | Which cars use it | Price including fitting |
|---|---|---|
| EFB | Basic Start-Stop, without regenerative braking: many small and compact cars | 130-230 € |
| AGM | Start-Stop with regenerative braking, mild hybrids and cars with high electrical demand | 180-280 € |
| Premium / high-capacity AGM | SUVs, saloons and premium cars with lots of equipment | 230-380 € |
Within each range, the price depends mainly on capacity: a 60 Ah Start-Stop battery costs less than a 70 Ah or 80 Ah one. For the exact figure for your car, ask for a quote with your number plate on WhatsApp and we’ll give you the final price before you come.
Most common Start-Stop battery sizes
These are the most common capacities in cars with Start-Stop, with their equivalent in Varta Dynamic EFB and Varta Dynamic AGM:
| Capacity | EFB (Varta Dynamic EFB) | AGM (Varta Dynamic AGM) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 Ah | Varta N50 · 50 Ah 550 A | Varta A9 · 50 Ah 540 A |
| 60 Ah | Varta N60 · 60 Ah 640 A | Varta A8 · 60 Ah 680 A |
| 70 Ah | Varta N70 · 70 Ah 760 A | Varta A7 · 70 Ah 760 A |
| 80 Ah | Varta N80 · 80 Ah 800 A | Varta A6 · 80 Ah 800 A |
| 95 Ah | Varta N95 · 95 Ah 850 A | Varta A5 · 95 Ah 850 A |
| 105 Ah | Varta N105 · 105 Ah 950 A | Varta A4 · 105 Ah 950 A |
Capacity alone isn’t enough to get it right: the exact battery also depends on the case dimensions and the polarity (which side the positive terminal is on). That’s why we always confirm it with your number plate.
EFB or AGM: how to tell which one your car takes
The difference between a Start-Stop battery and a normal one is what it can cope with: Start-Stop switches the engine off and on at every set of lights and keeps the electronics running while the engine is off. A conventional battery isn’t made for that job. Start-Stop batteries come in two technologies:
- Check the label on your current battery. It almost always says “EFB” or “AGM”. If it’s the original, that’s the technology your car needs.
- Regenerative braking means AGM. If the car recovers energy when braking or is a mild hybrid, it normally takes AGM. Basic Start-Stop usually takes EFB.
- Never downgrade. If the car has AGM, it gets AGM. You can upgrade from EFB to AGM (sometimes the change has to be coded), but never the other way round, and never to a conventional battery.
If you want to understand both technologies in depth, read our guide AGM vs EFB: which Start-Stop battery your car needs. You can browse the ranges in Varta Dynamic EFB and Varta Dynamic AGM.
Why a Start-Stop battery has to be registered or coded
Many cars with Start-Stop have a battery management system (BMS) with a sensor on the negative terminal. It estimates the battery’s wear and decides how much to charge it and when to let the Start-Stop work. If you fit a new battery without telling it, it keeps treating it like the old one.
- Incorrect charging. The alternator may overcharge or undercharge, and the new battery won’t last as long as it should.
- Start-Stop not working. The system thinks the battery is worn out and won’t let the engine stop at the lights, or warnings appear on the dashboard.
How Start-Stop battery coding works
It is done with diagnostic equipment plugged into the OBD port: the battery change is registered and, if the capacity or technology changes (for example, from EFB to AGM), the new data is coded in. This reprogramming is common on BMW, Mini, the Volkswagen Group and Mercedes, among others. With our replacement service, registration is included whenever the car needs it. We explain it step by step in how to register a car battery (BMS).
If the Start-Stop doesn’t work after changing the battery
It’s common for the Start-Stop to take a while to kick in again after the change: the car needs to be driven a little to learn the new battery’s state of charge. The system also switches itself off when the engine is cold or the air conditioning is on full. If it still doesn’t work after several journeys, pop into the shop and we’ll check it.
Fitting a Start-Stop battery yourself or in a shop?
It can be done at home if you have the tools and experience, but on a car with Start-Stop you should know this:
- Memory and electronics. Without a memory saver, the car loses settings when the battery is disconnected and some systems have to relearn.
- BMS registration. Many models need diagnostic equipment to register or code the new battery.
- Terminals and sensor. The sensor on the negative terminal is delicate: it must be removed and tightened without forcing it.
- Venting and location. If the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, it usually has a vent tube that must be reconnected, and access takes more work.
If you fit it yourself, the used battery must go to an authorised collection point. If you come to the shop, that and everything above is included.
Signs that your Start-Stop battery is failing
- The Start-Stop stops working or is almost always disabled, even with the engine warm.
- Warnings appear for the battery or “Start-Stop unavailable” on the dashboard.
- Slow starting, especially in the morning.
- Odd electrical faults: dimming lights, the radio restarting or the climate control cutting out.
- Age: in Málaga, with the summer heat, an EFB usually lasts 3 to 6 years and an AGM 4 to 7, depending on use.
No single sign is conclusive: sometimes the problem is the alternator. That’s why we test for free before replacing anything.

Frequently asked questions about Start-Stop batteries
Can I fit a normal battery in a Start-Stop car?
No. A conventional battery can’t cope with the constant restarts and partial discharges of Start-Stop: it degrades quickly, the system stops working and warnings may appear on the dashboard. Nor should you fit an EFB where the car takes AGM. Always fit the original technology or a higher one.
How much does it cost to replace a Start-Stop battery in Málaga?
Including fitting, registration if needed and recycling of the old battery, an EFB costs 130-230 € and an AGM 180-280 €, depending on capacity. The check beforehand is free. With your number plate we’ll give you the exact price before you come.
Does a Start-Stop battery need coding?
On many cars, yes: those with battery management (BMS) need the new battery registered with diagnostic equipment via the OBD port, and coded if the capacity or technology changes. If your car needs it, registration is included in our replacement service.
How long does it take to replace a Start-Stop battery?
On most cars, about 15 minutes; if the battery needs registering, a few minutes more. If it sits in the boot, under a seat or behind a cover, it can take a little longer, and we’ll tell you before we start.
Do I need an appointment? Where can I find a Start-Stop battery near me in Málaga?
You don’t need an appointment: we serve customers in order of arrival at C/ La Orotava, 100, in the Polígono San Luis area of Málaga. If you want to make sure we have your battery, send us your number plate on WhatsApp first. Directions are in how to get to the shop.
How long does a Start-Stop battery last?
In Málaga’s heat, an EFB usually lasts 3 to 6 years and an AGM 4 to 7, depending on use. Short journeys and not registering the battery when it’s replaced shorten its life.
Does the car lose its memory when the Start-Stop battery is replaced?
It shouldn’t. During the swap we connect a memory saver that powers the car, so the radio, windows and other settings are kept.
I’ve replaced the battery and the Start-Stop doesn’t work: what’s wrong?
It can be normal for the first few journeys, while the car learns the new battery’s state of charge. If it doesn’t come back, the most common causes are that the battery hasn’t been registered with the control unit or isn’t the right technology. Bring the car in and we’ll check it.
What is the best battery for a car with Start-Stop?
One with the technology and size your car requires, from a quality brand. As an Official Varta Distributor, we usually fit Varta Dynamic EFB or AGM (for example, the Varta A7 AGM 70 Ah 760 A), and we also supply Tudor, Exide and Optima depending on the battery and availability.
| Battery type | Price with installation |
