Which battery does the Dacia Duster take?
The Duster keeps things simple, but there is a catch: very different versions share the same name. The entry-level Duster I (2010-2017), with the 1.6 SCe petrol engine and no Start-Stop, is happy with a conventional battery; as soon as the TCe engines with Start-Stop arrive, you need EFB. The dCi diesel demands more cranking current (more CCA), and the very popular ECO-G (LPG) versions always start on the 12 V battery: gas does not change the battery type. On the Duster III (from 2024) you must tell the 48 V mild-hybrid from the full hybrid: the one we change is the 12 V battery, never the 48 V one or the traction pack.
| Version | Start-Stop | Recommended type | Indicative capacity / cranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duster I (2010-2017) 1.6 SCe entry-level petrol without Start-Stop | No | Conventional | 60 Ah / 480-540 A |
| Duster TCe 1.2 / 1.3 petrol with Start-Stop | Yes | EFB | 60-70 Ah / 560-640 A |
| Duster dCi 1.5 diesel with Start-Stop | Yes | EFB (AGM as an upgrade) | ~70 Ah / 640-680 A |
| Duster ECO-G (LPG) 1.0 / 1.6 | By version | Same as its petrol (conventional or EFB) | 60-70 Ah / 540-640 A |
| Duster III (from 2024) 48 V mild-hybrid (TCe 130) | Yes | 12 V EFB/AGM + separate 48 V system | 60-70 Ah / — |
| Duster III Hybrid 140 (full hybrid, from 2024) | Yes | 12 V auxiliary (EFB/AGM) | — / — |
These are indicative ranges: Dacia has fitted several sizes depending on year, engine, trim and market, and we will not invent a part number for you off the internet. What is firm: if your Duster has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional one; LPG does not change the type (it starts on the same 12 V as its petrol version); and the dCi diesel appreciates plenty of cranking current. On the Duster III we only touch the 12 V battery. Confirm it with the number plate.
Golden rule
If your Dacia Duster has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional one. LPG does not change that.
From EFB you can move up to AGM. From AGM never go back down to EFB.
How to know which one is yours
Forget hunting for the part number in forums. Give us the number plate —through the quote form on this page, by WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we will confirm the type, the size and the final fitted price of your Duster's battery.
Prefer to get an idea first? Use the "which battery do I need?" test. And if you just want to know whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes with no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just a voltage reading.
Three details help us pin it down: year, engine (SCe, TCe, dCi, ECO-G LPG or hybrid) and whether the engine switches off on its own at traffic lights (that is Start-Stop, and it changes the battery type).

Signs it is time to change it
The Duster has a very recognisable failure pattern, almost always tied to mixed country-and-city use:
- After a few days parked it won't start. Typical of the Duster that rests at the weekend or during the holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it doesn't make it.
- Sluggish in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery low on charge: cold and flat in the morning; after driving, the alternator has topped it up just enough. On the dCi diesel it shows earlier, because starting demands more amps.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at the lights. The Duster with Start-Stop disables it by itself when the battery can't hold the required charge level. It's not a whim: it's a warning.
- The screen resets or loses the time when you switch on.
- The locks and windows are slow or the car is slow to "wake up" when you unlock it.
And here is the nuance almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. A Duster that does 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes its recharge —starting draws a lot and the alternator has no time to replace it— so the battery lives chronically half-charged. That causes sulfation and shortens its life. On the ECO-G (LPG) the effect is sharper: these are very mixed-use cars, with frequent starts that push the battery hard (even though gas doesn't change the type). Add Málaga's heat and you can see why an urban Duster often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). If that's your case, a 30-40 minute drive now and then, or a battery maintainer, help a lot.
How much it costs in Málaga
The price ranges we work with, fitting included:
- Conventional: 85-140 €. The entry-level Duster I without Start-Stop (and the ECO-G based on that version): the cheapest Duster to maintain in this bracket.
- EFB: 130-230 €. What almost any Duster with Start-Stop needs: petrol TCe, dCi diesel and the ECO-G that carry it.
- AGM: 180-280 €. For the more demanding dCi, very well-equipped versions, or if your Duster sleeps in the sun and you want the widest margin.
- High-capacity AGM: 280-380 €. Reinforced AGM (≈80 Ah) for the most demanding, best-equipped versions, including the Duster III with more electronics on board.
Indicative prices with fitting included. The final price may vary depending on the complexity of the installation and the characteristics of the battery. We give you a no-obligation price.
It includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, coding if your Duster needs it and recycling of the old one. Fixed price before we start. Manufacturer's warranty under RDL 7/2021.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery does the Dacia Duster take?
The Dacia Duster takes a 12 V battery of between 60 and 70 Ah and 480-680 A cranking current, depending on the version. The entry-level Duster I (2010-2017) 1.6 SCe, without Start-Stop, is happy with a 60 Ah conventional; the petrol TCe with Start-Stop need a 60-70 Ah EFB; the dCi 1.5 diesel is around 70 Ah and 640-680 A (more CCA, with AGM as an upgrade); the ECO-G (LPG) carry the same battery as their petrol version; and the Duster III (from 2024) 48 V mild-hybrid or full hybrid uses a 12 V battery, which is the one we change, not the 48 V one or the traction pack. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it by number plate and change it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
I have an LPG (ECO-G) Duster, does it take a special battery?
No. LPG does not change the battery type: your ECO-G Duster always starts on the 12 V battery, just like its equivalent petrol version. If that version has no Start-Stop, it takes a conventional battery; if it does, an EFB. What does change is the use: LPG Dusters tend to cover a lot of country and city, with frequent starts, and that pushes the battery hard. That's why it's worth checking it often. We confirm it by number plate and change it in about 15 minutes.
I use the Duster for short city trips, is that why my battery keeps dying?
Yes, it's one of the most common causes. Starting draws a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can't put it back, so the battery always lives half-charged. Over time that causes sulfation on the plates and it loses capacity permanently. In Málaga, the heat speeds the process up too. Two simple fixes: take a 30-40 minute drive every two or three weeks, or connect a battery maintainer if the car sits for many days. And run the free check: we'll tell you whether it has already lost capacity or is just discharged.
Can I fit a battery with more amps in my Dacia Duster?
Within a margin, yes: raising the capacity a little does no harm, because the car draws what it needs and no more, and on the dCi diesel a bit of extra cranking current is even welcome. But there are three limits you can't negotiate: the battery must fit the tray, match the base clamp and respect the terminal layout. And more important than the amps is the type: if your Duster needs EFB or AGM, a big conventional will still be the wrong choice. With the number plate we'll tell you how far you can go without trouble.
Do the 2010-2017 Duster and the current one take the same battery?
No, and it's a common mistake. The entry-level Duster I, with the 1.6 SCe and no Start-Stop, was happy with a conventional of about 60 Ah. The Dusters with Start-Stop (the modern petrol TCe and dCi diesel), on the other hand, need EFB, usually of higher capacity. If you're offered a battery "like the old Duster's" for a Duster with Start-Stop, you're being sold something that will degrade in months. Generation, engine and trim decide: that's why we always confirm with the number plate.
I have a Duster III hybrid, which battery do you change?
We change the 12 V battery, the one that powers the lights, electronics and on-board systems and lets the car switch on. On the Duster III there are two cases: the 48 V mild-hybrid, which on top of the 12 V has a separate 48 V system, and the full hybrid, which adds a traction pack. In both, the 48 V one and the traction pack we do not touch: they belong to the official Dacia service. If your Duster won't switch on or the electronics fail, it's almost always the 12 V one, and we keep that in store and change it in about 15 minutes.
How much does it cost to change a Dacia Duster battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) a conventional battery costs 85-140 €, an EFB 130-230 €, an AGM 180-280 € and a high-capacity AGM 280-380 €, always with fitting included. Most Dacia Duster with Start-Stop fall in the EFB bracket of 130-230 €. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, coding if your Dacia Duster needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the fixed price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer's, under RDL 7/2021.
