The Renault Clio battery is 12 V and is around 55-70 Ah and 480-720 A depending on generation and engine: a conventional 55-60 Ah battery on naturally aspirated versions without Start-Stop (1.2 16V and 1.0 SCe), an EFB of 60-70 Ah on TCe and Blue dCi with Start-Stop, and a 12 V auxiliary battery of 45-60 Ah (EFB or AGM) on the E-Tech hybrid, which is the one that powers the car up. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we check it free of charge and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes. Guideline prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Renault Clio won’t start? Today, with no appointmentSend us your number plate on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the exact battery for your Renault Clio and the price in minutes.

The Renault Clio has spent half its life fighting for the top of Spain's sales charts, and in 2025 it was once again the country's second best-selling car. In Málaga you'll find all of them: high-mileage Clio IVs, brand-new Clio Vs and a growing number of E-Tech hybrids. Each one needs a different battery and, with the hybrid, there's a twist: the one that leaves you stranded isn't the big one, it's the 12 V. We'll clear it up in two minutes at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga, with a free test and a battery change without an appointment.

Which battery does the Renault Clio take?

It depends on the generation, the engine and whether your car has Start-Stop. Indicative figures, all 12 V:

VersionApprox. AhCranking (A)TechnologyStart-Stop
1.2 16V / 1.0 SCe (naturally aspirated petrol, no Start-Stop)55-60 Ah480-560 AConventionalNo
1.0 TCe / 1.3 TCe (turbo petrol with Start-Stop)60-70 Ah600-680 AEFBYes
1.5 dCi / Blue dCi (diesel)70 Ah640-720 AConventional or EFBDepends on version
E-Tech Full Hybrid45-60 AhEFB or AGM

Guideline figures: they vary with year, trim and equipment. “—” = we confirm it from your number plate.

About the E-Tech: the hybrid has two batteries and they are not treated the same. The high-voltage traction battery is a job for the official service network; it isn't replaced in a normal battery change and we don't touch it. The one that does fail — and the one we do replace — is the 12 V auxiliary: it powers all the electronics and switches the car on. If it's flat, the car won't start even with a fully charged traction battery.

About the diesels: dCi engines demand considerably more cranking current than the petrols. Skimping on CCA to save twenty euros comes back to bite on the first cold morning.

How to find out which one is yours

The Clio IV and Clio V share a name but not a platform or a battery, and even cars from the same year differ in capacity depending on trim and equipment. The quickest, most reliable route is to give us the number plate on WhatsApp or at the shop: with it we know the Ah, CCA, technology, polarity and exact dimensions. If you'd rather look yourself, the label on the battery under the bonnet carries those figures. And if you're not sure the battery is even the culprit, start with a free battery check.

Signs it's time to replace it

  • Slow, lazy cranking — very typical of a Clio IV that's over five years old.
  • Start-Stop no longer engages on TCe and Blue dCi versions.
  • On an E-Tech: the car won't go to READY, or an electrical system fault warning appears even though the traction battery has plenty of charge.
  • The R-Link / Easy Link system reboots on its own or is slow to wake up.
  • The battery warning light comes on while the engine is running: that usually points to the alternator, not the battery. Get the test done before buying anything.
  • It's more than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an AGM 5-7.

The E-Tech auxiliary battery is smaller, but that doesn't make it the cheapest: what you pay for there is the technology (EFB or AGM), not the amp-hours. We've been an Official Varta Distributor since 1999: distributor pricing, fitting and recycling of the old battery included, and the warranty set out in Spanish law RDL 7/2021.

Battery change without an appointment in Málaga

Drop by C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga without booking. First the free Midtronics test — plenty of "battery faults" on a Clio turn out to be the alternator or a parasitic drain — and if it does need replacing, fitting takes about 15 minutes, including registering the battery management system where your version requires it. We work at the shop only; we don't offer mobile fitting. Have a look at our car batteries in Málaga too. Coming from El Palo it's a short run along the coast, and plenty of customers come up from Marbella on the A-7.

Renault Clio battery FAQs

What battery does the Renault Clio take and how many amps does it need?

The Renault Clio battery is 12 V and is around 55-70 Ah and 480-720 A depending on generation and engine: a conventional 55-60 Ah battery on naturally aspirated versions without Start-Stop (1.2 16V and 1.0 SCe), an EFB of 60-70 Ah on TCe and Blue dCi with Start-Stop, and a 12 V auxiliary battery of 45-60 Ah (EFB or AGM) on the E-Tech hybrid, which is the one that powers the car up. These are guideline figures: confirm them free of charge with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change a Renault Clio battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Renault Clio battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with an EFB and 180-280 € with an AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test and the recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set out in Spanish RDL 7/2021. We have been an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve customers without an appointment.

Which battery does the Clio E-Tech hybrid use?

The one that gets replaced is the 12 V auxiliary battery, around 45-60 Ah, in EFB or AGM technology depending on the version. The high-voltage traction battery is not replaced during a normal battery change and we don't handle it. Interestingly, most cases of a hybrid that won't start are solved with the 12 V battery.

Can I fit a conventional battery to a Clio with Start-Stop?

It's a bad idea. It physically fits and the car starts, but the stop-start system puts the battery through constant cycling that a conventional one isn't built for: it sulphates and loses capacity within months. Those versions need an EFB, or an AGM if you want to upgrade.

Is the Clio IV battery the same as the Clio V one?

Not always. They share a name but not a platform, and even within one generation capacities differ by engine and equipment. That's why we don't sell "Clio batteries" by eye: give us the number plate and we'll tell you what your car takes.

How long does a Clio battery change take?

About 15 minutes at the shop, no appointment, including the test beforehand and registering the battery management system where the version needs it. We keep the car powered so it doesn't lose its memory settings.
