The Renault Clio battery is 12 V and is around 55-70 Ah and 480-720 A depending on generation and engine: a conventional 55-60 Ah battery on naturally aspirated versions without Start-Stop (1.2 16V and 1.0 SCe), an EFB of 60-70 Ah on TCe and Blue dCi with Start-Stop, and a 12 V auxiliary battery of 45-60 Ah (EFB or AGM) on the E-Tech hybrid, which is the one that powers the car up. The Renault Clio has spent half its life fighting for the top of Spain's sales charts, and in 2025 it was once again the country's second best-selling car. About the E-Tech: the hybrid has two batteries and they are not treated the same. The high-voltage traction battery is a job for the official service network; it isn't replaced in a normal battery change and we don't touch it. The one that does fail — and the one we do replace — is the 12 V auxiliary: it powers all the electronics and switches the car on. If it's flat, the car won't start even with a fully charged traction battery.
About the diesels: dCi engines demand considerably more cranking current than the petrols. Skimping on CCA to save twenty euros comes back to bite on the first cold morning.

The Clio IV and Clio V share a name but not a platform or a battery, and even cars from the same year differ in capacity depending on trim and equipment. Signs it's time to replace it
- Slow, lazy cranking — very typical of a Clio IV that's over five years old.
- Start-Stop no longer engages on TCe and Blue dCi versions.
- On an E-Tech: the car won't go to READY, or an electrical system fault warning appears even though the traction battery has plenty of charge.
- The R-Link / Easy Link system reboots on its own or is slow to wake up.
- The battery warning light comes on while the engine is running: that usually points to the alternator, not the battery. Get the test done before buying anything.
- It's more than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an AGM 5-7.

The E-Tech auxiliary battery is smaller, but that doesn't make it the cheapest: what you pay for there is the technology (EFB or AGM), not the amp-hours. Drop by C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga without booking. First the free Midtronics test — plenty of "battery faults" on a Clio turn out to be the alternator or a parasitic drain — and if it does need replacing, fitting takes about 15 minutes, including registering the battery management system where your version requires it. Which battery does the Clio E-Tech hybrid use?
The one that gets replaced is the 12 V auxiliary battery, around 45-60 Ah, in EFB or AGM technology depending on the version. The high-voltage traction battery is not replaced during a normal battery change and we don't handle it. Interestingly, most cases of a hybrid that won't start are solved with the 12 V battery.
Can I fit a conventional battery to a Clio with Start-Stop?
It's a bad idea. It physically fits and the car starts, but the stop-start system puts the battery through constant cycling that a conventional one isn't built for: it sulphates and loses capacity within months. Those versions need an EFB, or an AGM if you want to upgrade.
Is the Clio IV battery the same as the Clio V one?
Not always. They share a name but not a platform, and even within one generation capacities differ by engine and equipment. That's why we don't sell "Clio batteries" by eye: give us the number plate and we'll tell you what your car takes.
How long does a Clio battery change take?
