The Renault range runs 12 V batteries, almost always a 60-70 Ah EFB in the TCe engines with Start-Stop and a conventional one only on entry versions without Start-Stop. The brand's quirk is the E-Tech full hybrid: it carries an auxiliary 12 V lead-acid battery that does not crank the engine —that is done by the high-voltage starter-generator (HSG)—, but if that 12 V runs flat, the Renault will not power up even with the traction battery full. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test the battery for free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes, ECU registration included. Guide prices, fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Every kind of Renault rolls along the roads of Málaga: Clios of every generation, Capturs, Méganes and more and more E-Tech hybrids. On modern models with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, dropping in a battery and closing the bonnet is not enough: it has to be registered in the ECU so the car charges it properly. We do it on the spot, with no appointment and in store (we do not fit at your home), at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

What battery does a Renault take?

Most current Renaults use a TCe petrol engine with Start-Stop, which needs an EFB (never a conventional one): the EFB withstands the thousands of Start-Stop restarts. Some entry versions without Start-Stop are happy with a conventional battery. The important exception is the E-Tech full hybrid (Clio, Captur, Mégane, Austral...): its 12 V battery is auxiliary, it powers up the car and feeds the electronics, but it does not crank the combustion engine —the high-voltage starter-generator (HSG) does—. That is why on an E-Tech the cranking amps (CCA) figure is shown as “—”: it does not apply. And it is counter-intuitive: if that auxiliary 12 V runs flat, the hybrid gives no “READY” and will not power up even with the high-voltage battery charged. Some engines also come as bi-fuel LPG/E85, which for the 12 V battery behave just like the equivalent petrol. If your Renault has a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery must be registered; you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it's time to change it

  • Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.
  • Start-Stop stops kicking in on the TCe engines: the classic first warning.
  • Battery warning light or a “check charging system” message on the dashboard.
  • On an E-Tech, no “READY” and it won't power up even with the hybrid battery charged: it is almost always the auxiliary 12 V.
  • Battery changed recently but not registered in the ECU: the car charges it as if it were the old one and it lasts half as long.
  • More than 4 years. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an EFB/AGM 5-7.

Frequently asked questions about the Renault battery

What battery does a Renault take?

The Renault range runs 12 V batteries: a 60-70 Ah EFB in the TCe engines with Start-Stop and a conventional one on entry versions without Start-Stop. On the E-Tech full hybrid (Clio, Captur, Mégane, Austral) the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers up the car and feeds the electronics, but it does not crank the engine, which is done by the high-voltage starter-generator. These are guide values: confirm them for free from your plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change a Renault battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Renault battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB and 180-280 € with AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test, the ECU registration and recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We are Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and serve with no appointment.

Does the battery need coding or registering when changed on a Renault?

On Renaults with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes. The energy-management system adapts charging to the battery's ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car treats it as the old one, charges it poorly and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool in the same change and at no extra cost.

My Renault is an E-Tech hybrid, does the 12 V battery crank the engine?

No. On the E-Tech the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers up the car, feeds the electronics and closes the relays, but the combustion engine is cranked by the high-voltage starter-generator (HSG). That is why its cranking-amps figure does not apply. That said, if that 12 V runs flat the car gives no READY and won't power up even with the high-voltage battery charged, so it is best not to neglect it.

Can I fit a conventional battery on a Renault with Start-Stop to save money?

No. A Renault with Start-Stop needs an EFB as a minimum, because a conventional one can't take the thousands of restarts and sulphates within months. And if your version shipped with AGM you must keep AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. Saving there costs you dearly the following year.

How long does a Renault battery last in Málaga?

From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in northern Spain. If yours is over four years old, come by for the free test.
