Need a battery for your Seat León in Málaga? The León is a common sight on our streets and, because it shares the VAG Group MQB platform with the VW Golf, it follows the same rules: if it has Start-Stop it needs EFB or AGM, and the new battery must be registered via OBD. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify it by number plate and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics check and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.

Which battery does the Seat León take?
The León has been through four generations and one important change of philosophy. The León I and II (1999-2012) used conventional batteries and had no Start-Stop. From the León III (2012-2020) onwards, built on the VAG Group MQB platform —the same base it shares with the VW Golf— Start-Stop became widespread, bringing EFB and AGM batteries and the need to register the new battery via OBD. The León IV (from 2020) adds the 48 V eTSI mild-hybrid system and the plug-in e-Hybrid version, where the battery we change is still the 12 V one.
| Version | Start-Stop | Recommended type | Indicative capacity / cranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| León I / II (1999-2012) without Start-Stop | No | Conventional | 60-72 Ah / 540-680 A |
| León III (2012-2020) 1.2/1.4 TSI and 1.6/2.0 TDI with Start-Stop | Yes | EFB | 68-72 Ah / 640-720 A |
| León FR / Cupra (high performance, higher draw) | Yes | AGM | 70-80 Ah / 720-800 A |
| León IV (from 2020) 1.0/1.5 eTSI 48 V mild-hybrid | Yes | 12 V EFB or AGM (separate 48 V system) | 60-70 Ah / — |
| León IV e-Hybrid (plug-in hybrid) | Yes | 12 V auxiliary battery (EFB or AGM) | — / — |
| León IV petrol / diesel with Start-Stop | Yes | EFB or AGM | 70-72 Ah / 680-720 A |
These are indicative ranges: within the same engine SEAT has used several sizes depending on year, trim and market, and we are not going to invent a part number for you off the internet. What is firm: if your León has Start-Stop it needs EFB or AGM, never a conventional one; from EFB you can move up to AGM, from AGM never go down; and the new battery must be registered in the energy management via OBD, exactly as on any VAG. On the 48 V eTSI we change the 12 V battery; the 48 V one is not touched. Given the huge variety of León engines, confirm it with the plate.
Golden rule
If your Seat León has Start-Stop, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional battery.
From EFB you can move up to AGM. From AGM never go down. And the new battery is registered via OBD.
How to know which one is yours
Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Tell us the plate —through the quote form on this page, via WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we will confirm the type, the size and the final fitted price of your León's battery.
Prefer to get an idea first? Use the «which battery do I need?» test. And if what you want is to know whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes and with no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just voltage.
Three details help to pin it down: generation (I, II, III or IV), engine (TSI, TDI, eTSI, e-Hybrid or FR/Cupra) and whether the engine switches off on its own at traffic lights (that is Start-Stop, and it changes the battery type and requires registration).

Signs it is time to change it
The León has a very recognisable failure pattern, and it is almost always tied to urban use:
- After a few days parked it won't start. Classic on a León used only at weekends or left in the garage over the holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it doesn't cope.
- Sluggish start in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery low on charge: cold and flat in the morning; after driving, the alternator has topped it up just enough.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at the lights. The León disables it on its own when the battery isn't at the required charge level. It is not a system quirk: it is a warning.
- Warnings in the digital cluster or the screen and infotainment resetting when you switch on.
- Central locking and windows move slowly or the car is slow to «wake up» when you open it.
And here is the detail almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. A León doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes the recharge —starting draws a lot and the alternator has no time to replace it— and the battery lives chronically half-charged. That causes sulfation and shortens its life. Add the heat of Málaga and you see why an urban León often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). If that's your case, a 30-40 minute trip now and then or a battery maintainer make a big difference.
How much it costs in Málaga
The price ranges we work with, fitting included:
- Conventional: 85-140 €. The case of the León I/II without Start-Stop: the cheapest León to maintain in this bracket.
- EFB: 130-230 €. What most León III and IV with Start-Stop need, TSI/eTSI petrol or TDI diesel.
- AGM: 180-280 €. For very well-equipped versions, demanding diesels or if your León sleeps out in the sun and you want the most margin.
- High-capacity AGM (≈80 Ah): 280-380 €. The case of the León FR and Cupra, which draw more and usually call for a higher-capacity AGM.
Indicative prices with installation included. The final price may vary depending on the complexity of the installation and the characteristics of the battery. We give you a price with no obligation.
It includes an original Varta battery, fitting, OBD registration of your León and recycling of the old one. Fixed price before we start. Manufacturer's warranty under RDL 7/2021.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery does the Seat León take?
It depends on the generation. The Seat León I and II (1999-2012) without Start-Stop take a conventional battery of 60-72 Ah and 540-680 A. The León III (2012-2020) with Start-Stop needs an EFB of 68-72 Ah and 640-720 A. The FR and Cupra versions call for AGM of 70-80 Ah and 720-800 A. The León IV (from 2020) uses 12 V EFB or AGM —including the 48 V eTSI mild-hybrids and the plug-in e-Hybrid, where we only change the 12 V one. These are indicative ranges and any version with Start-Stop is registered via OBD. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it by plate and change it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
Does the battery need to be registered or coded on a Seat León?
Yes. As on every VAG Group car with Start-Stop, the León's energy management «knows» the fitted battery, so when you install a new one it must be registered via OBD so the system treats it as brand new and adjusts charging correctly. If it isn't registered, the car may keep charging it as if it were old and disable Start-Stop or shorten its life. We do that OBD-II registration in the same visit, included in the price. It is exactly the same procedure as on a VW Golf, with which the León shares its platform.
I have a León FR / Cupra. Does it need a special battery?
The high-performance FR and Cupra versions draw more and usually come from the factory with a higher-capacity AGM, around 70-80 Ah and 720-800 A. In these cases we recommend AGM and, often, a high-capacity AGM of about 80 Ah so it copes with the higher electrical draw and the heat of Málaga with margin. Never drop an FR or Cupra that came with AGM down to an EFB. As always, we confirm it with the plate and register the battery via OBD.
My León is a 48 V eTSI (or e-Hybrid). Which battery do you change?
We change the 12 V battery, which is the one that cranks and powers the car's electronics. On the León IV eTSI, a 48 V mild-hybrid, that 12 V battery is a normal EFB or AGM; the 48 V battery of the mild-hybrid system is not touched, it is a separate circuit. On the plug-in León e-Hybrid it is the same: we change the 12 V auxiliary battery (EFB or AGM), not the high-voltage traction battery, which is for the official SEAT service. If your León's 12 V battery goes flat, the car won't switch on even if the hybrid system has charge.
I only use the León for the town centre, 10-minute trips. Is that why the battery dies?
Yes, it is one of the most common causes. Starting uses a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can't replace it, so the battery is always half-charged. Over time that causes sulfation on the plates and it loses capacity permanently. In Málaga the heat speeds up the process too. Two simple remedies: take a 30-40 minute trip every two or three weeks, or connect a battery maintainer if the car sits for many days. And give it the free check: we tell you whether it has already lost capacity or is just discharged.
Is the León's battery the same as the VW Golf's?
In practice they follow the same criteria. The León shares the VAG Group MQB platform with the VW Golf, so the rules are identical: if it has Start-Stop it needs EFB or AGM (never conventional), from EFB you can move up to AGM but from AGM don't go down, and the new battery is registered via OBD. The specific capacities and sizes may vary with each car's engine and trim, which is why we don't just fit «the Golf one»: we always confirm the exact size, mount and type with your León's plate.
How much does it cost to change a Seat León battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) a conventional battery costs 85-140 €, an EFB 130-230 € and an AGM 180-280 €, always with installation included. A León FR or Cupra, or any version calling for a high-capacity AGM of about 80 Ah, falls in the 280-380 € bracket. The price includes an original Varta battery, fitting, OBD registration of your Seat León and recycling of the old one. We give you the fixed price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer's, under RDL 7/2021.
