A Citroën battery is 12 V and runs around 45-70 Ah and 400-760 A depending on the model and engine: conventional on small city cars without Start-Stop (some entry-level C3), EFB on most PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel units with Start-Stop (C3, C4, Berlingo) and AGM on the best-equipped versions and hybrids. Like the whole Stellantis group, it shares its platform with Peugeot and Opel and, on Start-Stop models, the new battery must be coded via OBD. What battery does a Citroën take?
Citroën belongs to the Stellantis group, so it shares its platform (CMP/EMP2) and components with Peugeot and Opel. In practice: PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel, with Start-Stop that requires EFB or AGM and OBD coding of the new battery. Golden rule with Start-Stop: you can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. If your car left the factory with AGM, keep AGM. And if you're not sure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check.

Signs it's time to change it
- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop won't engage, or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: the classic warning on modern Citroëns.
- A dashboard message that Start-Stop conditions are not met.
- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the audio system or the central locking.
- Battery changed recently but not coded via OBD: the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- On an ë-C4 or ë-Berlingo, the car won't switch on or show "READY" even with the traction battery charged: usually the 12 V auxiliary.

Do you have to code the battery when changing it on a Citroën?
On Citroëns with Start-Stop, yes. As a Stellantis platform, the energy management system records the battery's state and adapts charging to its ageing; if you fit a new one without coding it via OBD, the car charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost. On older C3 without Start-Stop it isn't needed.
My Citroën is electric (ë-C4), what 12 V battery does it take?
Electric Citroëns such as the ë-C4 and ë-Berlingo carry a 12 V auxiliary battery, separate from the high-voltage traction battery. That 12 V one does not drive the car: it switches it on and powers the electronics, lights and locking. It is usually AGM or EFB, and if it goes flat the car won't switch on or show "READY" even with the traction battery charged. We change it just like on a combustion car, with no appointment.
My Citroën came with AGM, can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM it's because the car has a level of electrical demand and cycling that an EFB cannot handle. Saving a few euros there usually costs you dearly the following year.
How long does a Citroën battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
