A Citroën C4 battery is 12 V and runs around 60-70 Ah and 540-760 A depending on the generation and engine: EFB on the PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel versions with Start-Stop (C4 II and C4 III), AGM on the best-equipped ones or those factory-fitted with AGM, and conventional only on some entry-level C4 II without Start-Stop. The fully electric ë-C4 also carries a 12 V auxiliary battery that switches the car on but does not drive it. As a Stellantis platform (EMP2), on Start-Stop models the new battery must be coded via OBD. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes. Guide prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

You see the Citroën C4 all over Málaga: from the everyday PureTech compact to the BlueHDi of high-mileage drivers and the electric ë-C4 starting to appear downtown. And they don't all take the same battery. On Start-Stop models it isn't enough to fit the new one and close the bonnet: it has to be coded via OBD so the car recognises it and charges it properly. We do it on the spot, with no appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. Everything in the shop: we don't do home fitting.

What battery does the Citroën C4 take?

The C4 shares the EMP2 platform and components with Peugeot and Opel within the Stellantis group. In practice: PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel, almost always with Start-Stop that requires EFB or AGM and OBD coding of the new battery. The electric ë-C4 uses a 12 V auxiliary battery. How to tell which one your C4 needs

Quick trick: look at the negative terminal. If it has a sensor with a connector coming off it (the battery state sensor), your C4 manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus OBD registration of the new battery. And if your car left the factory with AGM, keep AGM: you can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. The safest thing is to give us the number plate: we'll tell you Ah, cranking, technology and exact dimensions. And if you're not sure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check.

Signs the C4 battery needs changing

  • Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.
  • Start-Stop won't engage, or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern C4s.
  • A dashboard message that Start-Stop conditions are not met.
  • Intermittent glitches on the touchscreen, the audio system or the central locking.
  • Battery changed recently but not coded via OBD: the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
  • On an ë-C4, the car won't switch on or show "READY" even with the traction battery charged: usually the 12 V auxiliary.
  • More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7.

Frequently asked questions about the Citroën C4 battery

What battery does the Citroën C4 take and how many amps does it need?

A Citroën C4 battery is 12 V and runs around 60-70 Ah and 540-760 A depending on the generation and engine. The PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel versions with Start-Stop (C4 II and C4 III) take EFB, the best-equipped ones or factory-AGM cars use AGM, and only some entry-level C4 II without Start-Stop take a conventional one. The electric ë-C4 also carries a 12 V auxiliary battery. These are guide figures: confirm them free with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change a Citroën C4 battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Citroën C4 battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB and 180-280 € with AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test, the OBD coding and recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and serve you with no appointment.

Do you have to code the battery when changing it on a Citroën C4?

On C4s with Start-Stop, yes. As a Stellantis platform, the energy management system records the battery's state and adapts charging to its ageing; if you fit a new one without coding it via OBD, the car charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost. On an entry-level C4 II without Start-Stop it isn't needed.

My C4 is electric (ë-C4), what 12 V battery does it take?

The ë-C4 carries a 12 V auxiliary battery, separate from the high-voltage traction battery. That 12 V one does not drive the car: it switches it on and powers the electronics, lights and locking. It is usually AGM or EFB, and if it goes flat the car won't switch on or show "READY" even with the traction battery charged. We change it just like on a combustion car, with no appointment.

My C4 came with AGM from the factory, can I fit an EFB and save money?

No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM it's because the car has a level of electrical demand and cycling that an EFB cannot handle. Saving a few euros there usually costs you dearly the following year.

How long does a Citroën C4 battery last in Málaga?

From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
