The Fiat range uses 12 V batteries of between 45 and 70 Ah depending on the model and engine: a conventional one on the entry-level Panda and 500 without Start-Stop, EFB on the Panda, 500 and Tipo with Start-Stop, EFB too on the 500 Hybrid (mild-hybrid, the 12 V is the on-board battery) and an auxiliary 12 V battery (AGM or EFB) on the electric 500e. On Fiats with Start-Stop the new battery is coded via OBD. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it for free and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes. Indicative prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.
The Fiat is a familiar sight in central Málaga: the 500 and the Panda thread through the narrow streets of the old town and the city's impossible parking with ease. They are small cars, but their electronics are not always small: the ones with Start-Stop need EFB and the new battery has to be coded via OBD, and the 500 Hybrid and the 500e add their own twist. We sort it out on the spot, without an appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. Everything is done in store: we do not offer home fitting.
What battery does a Fiat take?
Fiat is part of the Stellantis group, so its models share mechanicals and energy management with Peugeot, Citroën and Opel. The rule is simple: the entry-level small cars without Start-Stop (basic Panda and 500) take a cheap conventional battery; as soon as Start-Stop appears you move up to EFB and the new battery must be coded via OBD. The 500 Hybrid is a 12 V mild-hybrid: the 12 V is still the on-board battery (EFB) and the micro-hybrid system needs it in good health. The 500e is fully electric and carries an auxiliary 12 V battery that powers the ignition and electronics but does not move the car (that is the job of the high-voltage battery). Indicative values, all in 12 V:
| Fiat range type | Technology | Coding | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level petrol Panda / 500 (no Start-Stop) | Conventional 45-50 Ah | Not needed | Basic city car; direct swap in 15 minutes |
| Panda / 500 / Tipo with Start-Stop | EFB 60-70 Ah | OBD coding | Stellantis platform; never conventional |
| Fiat 500 Hybrid (12 V mild-hybrid) | EFB | Coding depending on trim | The 12 V is the on-board battery; the mild-hybrid needs it healthy |
| Fiat 500e (fully electric) | AGM or EFB — 12 V auxiliary | Depending on version | Powers ignition and electronics; does not start or move the car |
| Fiat Tipo (petrol / diesel) | Conventional or EFB depending on Start-Stop | Coding if it has Start-Stop | Saloon and estate; slightly higher capacity |
Indicative values: they change with the year, trim and equipment. "—" = a figure we confirm from your number plate.
Quick tip: if your Fiat switches the engine off on its own at traffic lights, it has Start-Stop and needs EFB plus coding of the new battery. And remember you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB if your car came with AGM from the factory.

Signs it needs replacing
- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing on cool Málaga mornings.
- Start-Stop stops working or the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: a classic warning on modern Fiats.
- A dashboard message that the Start-Stop conditions are not met.
- Intermittent glitches in the screen, radio or windows.
- On the 500e or 500 Hybrid, the car gives no ignition or "READY" even though the traction battery is charged: usually a flat 12 V.
- A battery replaced recently but not coded: the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- More than 4 years old: in Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7.

Frequently asked questions about the battery of a Fiat
What battery does a Fiat take?
The Fiat range uses 12 V batteries of between 45 and 70 Ah depending on the model: conventional on the entry-level Panda and 500 without Start-Stop, EFB on the Panda, 500 and Tipo with Start-Stop, EFB too on the 500 Hybrid mild-hybrid and an auxiliary 12 V battery (AGM or EFB) on the electric 500e. On Fiats with Start-Stop the new battery is coded via OBD. These are indicative values: confirm them for free with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.
How much does it cost to change the battery of a Fiat in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing the battery of a Fiat costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB and 180-280 € with AGM, always with fitting included. The prior test, the coding and the recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we work without an appointment.
Does the battery need coding when you change it on a Fiat?
On Fiats with Start-Stop, yes. As a Stellantis platform, the energy management system stores the battery's history and adapts the charge; if you fit a new one without coding it via OBD, the car treats it like the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost. The entry-level Panda and 500 without Start-Stop do not need it.
What battery does the Fiat 500 Hybrid take?
The Fiat 500 Hybrid is a 12 V mild-hybrid: it fits an EFB battery that is still the car's on-board battery, and the micro-hybrid system needs it in good health to work. It has no high-voltage battery like a full hybrid. If the EFB degrades, you will notice that Start-Stop stops engaging and that the mild-hybrid system loses effectiveness. We confirm the exact reference from your number plate.
The Fiat 500e is electric, does it also have a 12 V battery?
Yes. The Fiat 500e is fully electric, but on top of the high-voltage traction battery it carries an auxiliary 12 V battery (AGM or EFB) that powers the ignition and all the electronics. It does not start any engine or move the car, but if it goes flat the 500e gives no READY even though the big battery is full. It is a common fault and the swap is quick: we treat it like any 12 V.
How long does a Fiat battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and from 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last on average less than in northern Spain. If yours is more than four years old, drop by for the free test.
