The Fiat 500 battery is 12 V and is around 44-60 Ah and 360-540 A depending on the version: a conventional 44-50 Ah battery on the classic petrol 500 without Start-Stop, an EFB of 50-60 Ah on the 500 with Start-Stop and on the 500 Hybrid (a 12 V mild-hybrid, with no 48 V system), and a 12 V auxiliary battery on the electric 500e, which cranks no engine at all and therefore has no cranking amps (“—”). The Fiat 500 is one of the cars you see parked everywhere in the Centro, the Soho and la Malagueta: small, easy to squeeze into any gap and ideal for getting around Málaga. But that city use, all short trips, is exactly what punishes a battery most, because the alternator rarely gets to recharge it fully. And not every 500 takes the same battery: the classic petrol 500 can run a conventional one, the Start-Stop versions and the 500 Hybrid need an EFB, and the electric 500e carries a 12 V auxiliary battery that cranks nothing but without which the car won't even switch on. We change it at the shop, without an appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga: we don't offer mobile fitting, and any registration needed plus recycling are included.

A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal. If there's a sensor with a connector coming out of it (the battery state sensor), your 500 manages charging actively and needs at least an EFB, plus registration of the new battery with the ECU. If there is no sensor and the car has no Start-Stop, a conventional battery is fine. Remember: a car with Start-Stop never takes a conventional battery, and if it left the factory with AGM it stays AGM.
How to tell which one your 500 needs
Between the classic 500, the 500 Hybrid and the 500e there are far too many combinations to guess. - Start-Stop doesn't engage, or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on 500s with Start-Stop and on the 500 Hybrid.
- Battery warning light or odd dashboard messages, with the trip computer or the radio resetting.

Does the Fiat 500 Hybrid take a different battery?
The 500 Hybrid is a 12 V mild-hybrid: there is no 48 V system, so its lead battery is the on-board one and it works far harder than in a normal 500, because the engine stops and restarts constantly. That is why it uses an EFB and will not accept a conventional battery. Fitting a conventional one to save money means the Start-Stop starts playing up within months.
What about the 12 V battery in the electric Fiat 500e?
The 500e has a 12 V auxiliary battery separate from the traction pack. That 12 V battery cranks no engine and does not move the car: it powers the electronics and switches the car on. If it goes flat, the 500e will not reach READY even with a full traction battery. That is why it has no cranking amps and the table shows “—”.
Does a new battery need registering on a Fiat 500?
It depends on the version. The 500s with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal do need it: the energy management system keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing, so if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as though it were the old one and shortens its life. We check it on the spot and, if needed, do it with our diagnostic equipment at no extra cost.
How long does a Fiat 500 battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and accelerates plate corrosion, and short trips around central Málaga never give it time to recharge fully. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
