The Opel range runs a 12 V battery, usually 45-70 Ah, and what it needs depends on the era of the model. Older GM-era Opels (Corsa D and E, Adam, Karl) take a cheap conventional battery unless they have Start-Stop; modern Stellantis-era Opels (Corsa F, Mokka, Astra, Crossland, Grandland) take EFB or AGM with Start-Stop and, on the ones that share the Peugeot 208 CMP platform, the new battery must be coded through the OBD port. The electric Corsa-e and Mokka-e use an auxiliary 12 V battery. The Opel Corsa is one of the most common runabouts in Málaga, and Opels of every era come through the workshop: from a GM-era Corsa C or D to a current Corsa F or Mokka, which are now close cousins of the Peugeot 208 and share even the control unit. That difference matters: on modern Opels with Start-Stop it isn’t enough to fit the battery and close the bonnet, it has to be coded through the OBD port so the car charges it properly. What battery does an Opel take?
It comes down to the era of the model. GM-era Opels (up to 2017) generally run a simple conventional battery, except the ecoFLEX versions with Start-Stop, which already needed EFB. Stellantis-era Opels —Corsa F, Mokka B, Crossland, Grandland and recent Astra— use EFB or AGM with Start-Stop, and those on the CMP platform (the same as the Peugeot 208) need the new battery to be coded via OBD. Quick tip: look at the negative terminal. If a sensor with a connector comes off it (the battery state sensor), your Opel manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus coding of the new battery. And if your car came with AGM from the factory, keep AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB.

Signs it needs changing
- Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing on Málaga’s cooler mornings.
- Start-Stop won’t engage, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself moments later: the classic first warning on the Corsa F, Mokka and Crossland.
- A battery warning light or message on the dash, or a notice that the Start-Stop conditions aren’t met.
- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the radio or the central locking.
- Battery changed recently but not coded on the CMP models: the car charges it poorly and it lasts half as long.
- On a Corsa-e or Mokka-e, the car not powering up or showing «READY» even though the traction battery is charged: usually the auxiliary 12 V.
- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7.

Does the battery need coding when it is changed on an Opel?
On modern Opels with Start-Stop and a sensor on the negative terminal, yes, especially those that share the CMP platform with the Peugeot 208 (Corsa F, Mokka). The energy management system stores the battery history and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without coding it via OBD, the car charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost.
My Opel is an older Corsa, does it need a special battery?
It depends. A GM-era Corsa C or D without Start-Stop is happy with a conventional 45-60 Ah battery, with no coding or fuss, and it is one of the quickest changes we do. But a Corsa E ecoFLEX with Start-Stop already needs EFB, and the current Corsa F needs EFB or AGM plus coding. Send us the plate and we will tell you exactly which one is yours.
What about the 12 V battery of a Corsa-e or Mokka-e?
On an electric Opel such as the Corsa-e or Mokka-e, the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers up the car and feeds the electronics, but it does not drive the car, which runs on the high-voltage battery. If that 12 V goes flat, the car will not power up or show «READY» even though the traction battery is full. It is usually an AGM or EFB, and we change it just like on any other Opel.
How long does an Opel battery last in Málaga?
Four to six years for a conventional one and five to seven for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in northern Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
