What battery does the Kia Sportage use?
The Sportage varies a lot by generation and engine. The QL (2015-2021) still offered entry versions without Start-Stop, while the Start-Stop versions, the 48V mild-hybrid and the NQ5 (from 2021) —hybrid and plug-in hybrid— carry far more demanding electronics. And here is the detail that confuses many people: the 48V mild-hybrid and hybrid Sportage still carry a 12 V lead battery, and that is the one that runs flat and gets replaced.

Signs it's time to replace it
The Sportage has a very recognisable failure pattern, almost always tied to urban use:
- After a few days parked it won't start. Classic for anyone who uses it at weekends or leaves it in the garage over the holidays. The electronics keep drawing current at rest and, if the battery is already old, it can't cope.
- Sluggish start in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery low on charge: cold and flat in the morning; after driving, the alternator has topped it up just enough.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at the lights. The system disables it on its own when the battery isn't at the required charge level. It's not a quirk: it's a warning.
- On 48V or hybrids, dashboard warnings appear or the car won't power up: it's almost always the 12 V battery, not the high-voltage pack.
- The screen reboots or loses the time when you switch on.
- The locks and windows are slow or the car is slow to “wake up” when you open it.
And here is the point almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries. A Sportage doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes its recharge —starting draws a lot and the alternator has no time to replace it—, so the battery lives chronically half-charged. That causes sulphation and shortens its life. Add Málaga's heat and you see why an urban Sportage often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). On 48V and hybrids the 12 V works even harder, managing starts and standby loads. If that's your case, a 30-40 minute drive now and then or a trickle charger help a lot.

My Sportage is a 48V mild-hybrid, which battery do you change?
The 12 V one. Your mild-hybrid Sportage has two batteries: a 48 V lithium one that assists the engine (the mild-hybrid system) and a separate 12 V lead one that powers lights, electronics and the starting of the on-board systems. The one that runs flat and leaves the car unable to power up, and the one we change, is the 12 V, which is a normal EFB or AGM. The 48 V battery is not touched: that's for the official Kia service. The most common mistake is thinking a mild-hybrid has no normal battery; it does, and it's exactly the one we usually replace.
Does the hybrid Sportage have a 12 V battery?
Yes. Besides the high-voltage traction battery, the Sportage HEV and PHEV carry a 12 V auxiliary battery (EFB or AGM) that powers the electronics and starts up the on-board systems. If that 12 V battery runs flat, the car won't power up even though the traction battery is fully charged. It's a battery we stock and change in about 15 minutes. We don't touch the traction battery: that's for the official Kia service.
I only use the Sportage in town, 10-minute trips. Is that why the battery dies?
Yes, it's one of the most common causes in Málaga. Starting uses a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator doesn't manage to replace it, so the battery always lives half-charged. Over time that causes sulphation on the plates and a permanent loss of capacity, and Málaga's heat speeds up the process. On 48V and hybrids the 12 V battery also works hard managing starts and standby loads. Two remedies: a 30-40 minute drive every two or three weeks, or a trickle charger if the car sits for days. Can I fit a battery with more amps in my Kia Sportage?
Within a margin, yes: going up a little in capacity does no harm, because the car draws what it needs and no more. But there are three limits that aren't negotiable: the battery must fit the tray, match the base clamp and respect the terminal layout. And more important than the amps is the type: if your Sportage has Start-Stop, is 48V or a hybrid, it needs EFB or AGM, and a bigger conventional one would still be the wrong choice. Do the 2015 Sportage and the 2021-onwards one use the same battery?
Not always. The Sportage QL (2015-2021) entry model, without Start-Stop, can take a conventional battery of about 60 Ah. As soon as Start-Stop appears (1.6 T-GDI, 1.6 CRDi) the battery becomes EFB, and on the 48 V mild-hybrid and across the whole NQ5 (from 2021) hybrid and plug-in the 12 V is EFB or AGM.
