Which battery does the Ford Puma take?
The Puma launched in 2019 on Ford’s B platform —the same base as the Fiesta— and from day one it has lived with two very different mechanical philosophies: petrol versions with conventional Start-Stop, and 48 V mild-hybrid (mHEV) versions with a small motor-generator built into the accessory belt (BISG) that assists on start-up and gentle acceleration. That 48 V technology is the Puma’s big peculiarity, and also the one that causes the most confusion when it comes to changing the battery: an mHEV Puma carries two batteries, not one.

Signs it is time to replace it
The Puma has a recognisable failure pattern, and on mHEV versions there’s a nuance worth telling apart:
- It won’t start after a few days parked. A classic on Pumas used only at weekends or left in the garage over the holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it doesn’t make it.
- Lazy starts in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery that’s short on charge: in the morning it’s cold and flat; after some driving, the alternator has put back just enough.
- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The Puma disables it on its own when the 12 V battery isn’t at the required state of charge. It’s not a system quirk: it’s a warning.
- A warning light for the mHEV system appears, not the battery one. Watch this nuance: a warning from the 48 V system (electric assist, brake energy recovery) is a different fault from the 12 V starting battery, and it’s usually sorted by the official Ford service, not us.
- The touchscreen reboots or loses the clock when you switch on the ignition.
- Locks and windows are slow, or the car takes a while to “wake up” when you unlock it.
And here’s the nuance almost nobody tells you: short trips kill batteries, and even more so on an mHEV Puma, because the 12 V battery works constantly to sustain Start-Stop and the electronics while the 48 V system does the rest. A Puma doing 10 minutes to work and 10 back never completes a recharge —starting uses a lot and the alternator doesn’t have time to put it back— so the battery lives chronically half charged. That causes sulphation and shortens its life. Add Málaga’s heat and you can see why an urban Puma often stops at 4-6 years (5-7 with AGM). Yes, that’s one of the most common causes, and it shows up even more on an mHEV Puma because the 12 V battery has to sustain Start-Stop and all the electronics while the 48 V system works alongside it. Starting uses a lot of energy and in 10 minutes the alternator can’t put it back, so the battery is permanently living at half charge. Over time that causes sulphation on the plates and it loses capacity for good. In Málaga, the heat speeds the process up. Can I fit a higher-amperage battery to my Ford Puma?
Within limits, yes: going up slightly in capacity harms nothing, because the car draws what it needs and no more. But there are three non-negotiable limits: the battery has to fit the space, match the base hold-down and keep the terminal layout. And on the Puma, more important than the amps is the type: if your version is mHEV, it needs a 12 V AGM, and fitting a giant conventional battery is still the wrong choice. What’s the difference between the 12 V and 48 V batteries on an mHEV Ford Puma, and which one do you change?
They’re two completely different batteries with different jobs. The 48 V one is a smaller lithium battery that powers the BISG (the motor-generator built into the belt) and assists the engine on start-up and gentle acceleration to save fuel: that one is fitted, checked and replaced by the official Ford service, with specific equipment and warranty, and we don’t work on it. The 12 V one is a lead battery, usually AGM, that powers the backup starter, lights, electronics and every conventional system in the car: that’s the one that wears out with daily use, causes starting problems, and the one we change in the shop, on the spot with no appointment. Why does my Puma need AGM and not a conventional battery?
Because the 48 V mHEV versions combine Start-Stop, the BISG motor-generator and more standby electronics, and all of that demands far more charge-discharge cycles from the 12 V battery than a conventional one can handle without degrading within a few months. An AGM is built for that: it copes better with micro-cycles, recovers faster and gives more headroom in a bay that also runs hot in summer. If your Puma is mHEV, fitting a conventional battery makes no sense —and saves nothing real—: it will fail sooner and you’ll lose the assurance that the battery performs as it should.
Does my Ford Puma need AGM or EFB?
It depends on the version. The 1.0 EcoBoost without mHEV, with regular Start-Stop, is happy with an EFB. The 48 V mHEV Puma needs a 12 V AGM, full stop, for the reasons explained above.
