A Ford battery is 12 V and runs about 50-80 Ah and 500-800 A depending on the model and engine: conventional on older Ka+, EcoSport and Fiesta without Start-Stop, EFB on EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel with Start-Stop (Fiesta, Focus), and AGM on the Puma and Kuga 48 V mild-hybrid —which carry a separate 12 V AGM alongside the 48 V system— and on the Kuga PHEV, where the 12 V is an auxiliary battery. On Fords with Start-Stop and a battery sensor, the new one must be registered (BMS reset). Ford is one of the most common cars in Málaga: Fiesta, Focus, Puma and Kuga are on every street and we change batteries for all of them every day. The difference is the generation: an older Ka+ or Fiesta is sorted with a conventional battery in five minutes, but a modern Puma or Kuga has Start-Stop and many are 48 V mild-hybrid, so the new battery has to be registered in the ECU. What battery does a Ford take?
Ford uses a battery management system (BMS) on its Start-Stop models: when a new battery is fitted it needs a BMS reset/registration so the car charges it correctly; otherwise it treats it like the old one and it lasts half as long. Indicative figures, all at 12 V:

Golden rule: never drop from AGM to EFB or from EFB to conventional. If your Puma or Kuga is a mild-hybrid, the 12 V is AGM and sits apart from the 48 V pack; and on a Kuga PHEV the 12 V does not start the engine, it only powers the ignition and electronics.

Signs it's time to change it
- Slow cold cranking, especially first thing in the morning on the EcoBoost.
- Start-Stop stops kicking in or the engine restarts on its own: the first warning on modern Fords.

Does the battery need registering or coding when changed on a Ford?
On Fords with Start-Stop and a battery sensor, yes. The energy management system (BMS) stores the battery's state and adapts charging to its wear: if you fit a new one without the BMS reset, the car charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost. On older Fords without Start-Stop it isn't needed.
My Ford Puma or Kuga is a 48 V mild-hybrid, does it take a special battery?
Yes. The mild-hybrid Puma and Kuga carry a 48 V lithium system to assist the engine, but they also have a 12 V lead battery, usually AGM, which is the on-board one: the one that powers the ignition and electronics. When it runs down, the car fails even if the 48 V system is fine. That 12 V AGM is the one we change and register; the 48 V pack is not touched in a normal battery change.
My Kuga is a plug-in hybrid, does the 12 V battery start the car?
No. On the Kuga PHEV the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers the ignition and electronics, but it does not move the car or start the combustion engine, that is done by the high-voltage battery. If the 12 V runs down, the car won't go READY even if the traction battery is charged. It is usually AGM or EFB and is changed like any other, with its registration included.
How long does a Ford battery last in Málaga?
4 to 6 years for a conventional and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so in Málaga batteries last on average less than inland. If your Ford's battery is over four years old, come in for the free test before it leaves you stranded.
