A Ford Focus battery is 12 V and runs around 60-70 Ah and 540-760 A depending on the generation and engine: EFB on Mk3 and Mk4 with Start-Stop, both EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue or TDCi diesel, AGM on the Mk4 EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid and the best-equipped versions, and conventional only on some entry-level Mk3 without Start-Stop. On Focus models with Start-Stop the new battery must be registered in the BMS with the diagnostic tool. The Ford Focus is one of the most common compacts in Málaga: second-hand Mk3s doing city runs, everyday Mk4 EcoBoosts and EcoBlue diesels for people who cover the A-7 every week. What battery does the Ford Focus take?
On the Focus what matters is the generation and whether it has Start-Stop. EcoBoost petrol and TDCi (Mk3) or EcoBlue (Mk4) diesel, almost always with Start-Stop, which requires EFB or AGM and registration of the new battery in the BMS. How to tell which one your Focus needs
Quick trick: look at the negative terminal. If it has a sensor with a connector coming off it (the BMS sensor), your Focus manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if your car left the factory with AGM, keep AGM: you can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. Does the battery have to be registered in the BMS when changing it on a Ford Focus?
On Focus models with Start-Stop, yes. The battery monitoring system (BMS) uses a sensor on the negative terminal to measure how much charge the battery accepts and adjusts the alternator to its ageing; if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as if it were the old one and shortens its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost. On an entry-level Mk3 without Start-Stop it isn't needed.
My Focus is an EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid, does it also have a 12 V battery?
Yes. The Mk4 EcoBoost mild-hybrid has a 48 V battery that assists the engine, but it also carries the 12 V on-board battery, which switches the car on and powers the lights, SYNC and electronics. That 12 V one is usually AGM and it is the one we change: the 48 V pack is a separate system. If the 12 V is flat, you will see hybrid system warnings even with everything else in order.
My Focus came with AGM from the factory, can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM it's because the car has a level of electrical demand and cycling that an EFB cannot handle. Saving a few euros there usually costs you dearly the following year.
How long does a Ford Focus battery last in Málaga?
From 4 to 6 years for a conventional one and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test.
