Car won't start: how to know if it's the battery

The typical symptoms of a flat or worn-out battery are easy to spot:

• When you turn the key or press start you hear rapid clicking ("click-click-click") or a single click, but the engine won't crank.
• The starter cranks very slowly and weakly, as if it lacks power.
• The dashboard lights and headlights look dim or flicker.
• The electronics play up: central locking won't respond, the radio resets, windows move slowly.
• Nothing happens at all when you switch on the ignition (fully dead battery or loose terminal).

In Málaga, with the warm Costa del Sol climate, a battery's real lifespan is usually 4 to 6 years. Heat evaporates the electrolyte and speeds up wear, so many failures show up in summer, after a failed start in the morning.

What to do right now: jump-starting and precautions

If the car won't start and you suspect the battery, you can try a jump-start from another vehicle. Do it carefully:

1. Bring the "donor" car close without the two vehicles touching. Switch off both engines.
2. Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery and the other end to the positive (+) of the good battery.
3. Connect the black clamp to the negative (–) of the good battery and the other end to a bare metal part of the dead car (not directly to the negative terminal), away from the battery.
4. Start the donor car, wait a couple of minutes, then try to start yours.
5. Remove the leads in reverse order, without letting them touch.

Precautions: no smoking or flames nearby (the battery releases hydrogen), never cross the clamps (positive with negative), and check the battery isn't swollen or leaking. If it is, don't handle it.

Once started, drive for 20-30 minutes without stopping so the alternator recharges the battery somewhat. Note: a jump-start is a temporary fix. If the battery is already worn out with age, it will go flat again as soon as you switch off. Use the chance to come and replace it.

Battery or alternator? How to tell them apart

That's the key question. A simple clue:

• It's usually the battery if the car jump-starts and then runs normally, or if the fault appears after several days parked, extreme cold/heat or leaving a light on.
• It may be the alternator if, once running, the car stalls, the lights flicker, there's an odd smell or the red battery light comes on while you drive.
