Starter and leisure: your caravan has two different batteries
A motorhome or camper has two jobs that almost always call for different batteries, and mixing them up is the most common mistake:
- Starter battery (engine): cranks the vehicle's engine. It prioritises a strong burst of current (CCA) for a few seconds. It is a conventional starter battery, like a car or van battery.
- Leisure or auxiliary battery (living area): powers the fridge, lights, water pump, heater and chargers for hours. It is discharged and recharged many times, so it needs to be a deep-cycle battery, designed to take that treatment without degrading.
Using a starter battery as a leisure battery wears it out in a couple of seasons, because it is not built for deep discharges. The right approach is to separate both circuits and fit the correct battery for each function.
Which leisure battery to choose
For the living area we work with three solutions, from entry level to top performance:

How the leisure battery is recharged
The auxiliary battery is topped up in several ways, and all of them should be properly sized:
- Solar panels: through a regulator they charge during the day without burning fuel. The best option for range on the road and for keeping the battery healthy in winter storage.
- Engine alternator: charges while you drive. On modern vehicles with a smart alternator a booster is usually needed for the leisure battery to receive a full charge.
- DC-DC charger (booster) and mains charger: the DC-DC manages charging between the starter and leisure batteries and protects both; plugging into the campsite mains recharges to 100%.
If you are going to fit lithium, keep in mind it needs a compatible charger and BMS: we advise you so the whole system is coherent and safe.
