Málaga offers over 2,900 hours of sunshine per year — some of the best conditions for solar self-consumption in all of Europe. If you have a photovoltaic, off-grid or backup installation, the battery is the component that determines its real lifespan and efficiency.

Solar battery types available

AGM (sealed, maintenance-free)

Ideal for medium off-grid installations or home backup. Recommended depth of discharge (DoD): 50%. 600-800 cycles at 50% DoD. Tolerates temperatures up to 45 °C well (inland Málaga in summer).

GEL (gelled electrolyte)

Better tolerance to deep discharges (DoD 60%) and high resistance to extreme heat. Recommended for rural houses without natural shade, where the battery can exceed 50 °C in a sun-exposed cabinet. Lifespan 5-8 years.

LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate)

This is what we recommend for a new installation. Depth of discharge 80-90% without damage, 4000-6000 cycles (15+ years in domestic use), 50% of the weight of AGM, CAN communication with Victron/Growatt/Huawei/Solax inverters. Initial cost 2-3× higher but paying for itself within 5-7 years.

Calculating the capacity you need

Rule of thumb: useful capacity = daily consumption × days of autonomy / DoD. Example, basic off-grid house 5 kWh/day × 2 days autonomy / 0.5 AGM DoD = 20 kWh of AGM nominal capacity, or 12 kWh LiFePO4 (80% DoD).

Typical mistakes to avoid

  • Using a starter (non-cyclic) battery in solar: it lasts 6-12 months.
  • Mixing batteries of different age or brand: the worst one drags the rest down.
  • Installing in an unventilated, south-facing cabinet — temperatures above 55 °C destroy capacity.
  • Not using deep-discharge protection: a lead-acid battery discharged to 9 V is beyond recovery.

LiFePO4 lithium or AGM? The key decision

  • LiFePO4 lithium: far more cycles (3,000-6,000), deep discharge without penalty, lighter, maintenance-free. Higher upfront cost, lower cost per cycle. The default for new installs in a main home.
  • AGM / gel: lower entry price and very proven behaviour, but fewer cycles (500-1,200) and best kept above 50 % charge. Still sensible for holiday homes and weekend use.
  • OPzS/OPzV stationary: for large off-grid systems with daily use — very long life if well maintained.

Sizing your storage (quick rule)

Take the daily kWh you want to cover overnight, multiply by the days of autonomy you need (1-2 grid-tied, 2-3 off-grid) and divide by the usable depth of discharge (≈0.9 lithium, ≈0.5 AGM). Example: 4 kWh × 1.5 days ÷ 0.9 ≈ 6.7 usable kWh in lithium. Bring us your bill or project and we will size it free of charge.

Málaga heat and solar battery life

The same sun that fills your panels punishes the storage: above 30 °C a lead battery can lose half its life, and lithium also prefers shade and airflow. Three local rules: never in a metal shed in the sun, a north-facing wall or ventilated basement is best, and leave space between blocks so they breathe.

Which solar battery suits me in Málaga?
For a main home with a new install, LiFePO4 lithium for cycles and cost per stored kWh. For holiday homes or intermittent use, AGM remains reasonable. We size it free with your real consumption.
How long does a solar battery last here?
It depends on chemistry, cycles and above all heat: well placed and ventilated, AGM runs 4-7 years and LiFePO4 lithium 10 or more. Badly ventilated in the sun, either lasts half that.
