Leisure batteries for motorhomes and campervans in Malaga

The leisure (habitation) battery is what powers your living space: the fridge, lights, water pump, heater and inverter when you are away from a hook-up. This is not about starting the engine, it is about holding several days of autonomy while it discharges and recharges without wearing out. Leisure is not the same as starter

A starter battery delivers a strong burst of current for a few seconds to crank the engine. A leisure (auxiliary) battery works the other way round: it supplies a small current for many hours and is deep-discharged again and again, so it must be a deep-cycle type. Deep-cycle AGM or LiFePO4 lithium

For the habitation side we work with two technologies. The right choice depends on how many days you want off-grid and how much weight you can carry.

Deep-cycle AGM (Varta Professional Deep Cycle)

Sealed, maintenance-free and very tolerant of road vibration. Recommended depth of discharge (DoD) around 50%, roughly 400-600 cycles and good behaviour in coastal heat. It is the cheapest entry option and the one most often replaced during winter stays. It lasts well if you keep to 50% discharge and recharge it regularly.

LiFePO4 lithium with BMS

This is what we recommend if you actually live on board. It accepts 80-90% discharge without damage, gives 3,000 to 6,000 cycles, weighs half as much as lead and recharges far faster. A built-in BMS (battery management system) protects it against overcharge, over-discharge and temperature. It costs 2-3 times more to buy, but on cycles and weight it typically pays for itself in about 5-7 years with regular use. See also our lithium batteries in Malaga.

How to size the capacity you need

The rule of thumb is: usable capacity = daily consumption (Ah) × days of autonomy ÷ DoD. Add up what each appliance draws per day. A real example for a couple with a compressor fridge, LED lights, pump and phone charging is about 60 Ah a day. For two days of autonomy you need 120 usable Ah: that is 240 Ah of AGM (at 50% DoD) or about 150 Ah of lithium (at 80%). • Varta Professional Deep Cycle (AGM/GEL) — the deep-cycle benchmark, 100, 140 and 200 Ah at 12 V.
• Varta Professional Dual Purpose (AGM/EFB) — dual purpose, if you want a single battery for moderate service and cranking.
• LiFePO4 12 V from 100 to 300 Ah with an integrated BMS and, on prepared models, Bluetooth or CAN/RS485 communication.
• Tudor and Exide — deep-cycle GEL range, a good reference for hot climates.

Fitting, replacement and compatibility

We replace the leisure battery in the vehicle itself, tighten the terminals and take the old one away for free recycling. Before fitting lithium we check that your mains charger, DC-DC (B2B) charger and solar regulator are LiFePO4-compatible: if they are not, the battery will not charge to 100% or the BMS will disconnect it.
