Need a battery for your Toyota Yaris Cross in Málaga? The Yaris Cross is a hybrid B-SUV, and its 12 V battery is not the one that starts the engine: it’s an auxiliary AGM battery that wakes the car up, powers the electronics and brings up READY mode. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify it from the number plate and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics test and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.
Key facts
- Architecture: hybrid B-SUV (HEV) on the GA-B platform. The 12 V battery is auxiliary and AGM.
- It does not start the engine: on the hybrid the 12 V wakes the car; the combustion engine is turned by the high-voltage traction battery.
- Typical capacity: around 45 Ah auxiliary AGM on the hybrid; the petrol variant with Start-Stop is around 60 Ah / 560-600 A.
- Price with fitting: conventional 85-140 €, EFB 130-230 €, AGM 180-280 €, premium AGM 280-380 €.
- Real service life in Málaga: 4-6 years for the 12 V auxiliary battery; the heat speeds up its decline.

Which battery does the Toyota Yaris Cross take?
Almost every Yaris Cross on Málaga’s roads is a hybrid, and there’s one detail that changes everything: the 12 V battery is not a starter battery, it’s an auxiliary AGM battery of around 45 Ah. It turns no starter motor; its job is to wake the electronics, close the relays and bring the car into READY. Cranking the combustion engine is done by the high-voltage traction battery, which is a different thing. That’s why fitting an ordinary conventional car battery here is a fundamental mistake.
| Version | System | Recommended type | Indicative capacity / cranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaris Cross 1.5 Hybrid 116 (2021-) | Hybrid HEV | AGM (12 V auxiliary) | ~45 Ah / — |
| Yaris Cross 1.5 Hybrid AWD-i (2021-) | Hybrid HEV | AGM (12 V auxiliary) | ~45 Ah / — |
| Yaris Cross 1.5 Hybrid 130 GR Sport (2024-) | Hybrid HEV | AGM (12 V auxiliary) | ~45 Ah / — |
| Yaris Cross 1.5 petrol (market-dependent, not hybrid) | Start-Stop | EFB | ~60 Ah / 560-600 A |
These are indicative ranges. On the hybrids the cranking column shows “—” on purpose: the 12 V battery turns no starter motor, so its cranking current (CCA) isn’t the figure that matters; what matters is that it’s AGM and the right size. And we won’t invent a part number for you over the internet. The traction battery is what moves the car, and we don’t touch that here: it’s official Toyota service. Confirm it with the number plate.
Golden rule
On the hybrid Toyota Yaris Cross the 12 V battery is auxiliary and AGM: it doesn’t start the engine, the traction battery does.
Never replace it with a conventional one.
How to find out which one is yours
Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Give us the number plate —from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we’ll confirm the type, the size and the final fitted price for your Yaris Cross’s auxiliary battery.
Want an idea first? Use the “which battery do I need?” test. And if what you want to know is whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes, no obligation: it measures the real charge and health of the 12 V, not just a voltage reading.
Two details help narrow it down: whether it’s a hybrid (almost certainly it is: 1.5 Hybrid 116, AWD-i or 130 GR Sport) or the petrol variant depending on market, and the year. With that and the number plate we know whether it needs an auxiliary AGM or, in the rare petrol case, an EFB.

Signs it is time to replace it
The hybrid Yaris Cross has a different failure pattern from a petrol car, because what fails is the 12 V auxiliary battery:
- It won’t go into READY, or takes a while. The most typical symptom: you press Start and the car doesn’t reach READY mode, or does so with a delay. It’s not “the starter motor cranks slowly”: it’s the 12 V failing to wake the system properly.
- Several warning lights come on as the car wakes. The dash fills with seemingly random alerts (hybrid, brakes, traction); very often it’s just a low 12 V.
- After many days parked it doesn’t respond. With the car unused, the connected services and the smart key keep drawing power at rest. If the auxiliary is already old, it runs out and the car won’t wake up.
- The screen and services reboot or lose their settings when you switch on.
- The locks and the system start-up are sluggish when you unlock the car.
And here’s the nuance specific to the hybrid: unlike a conventional car, short trips matter less. The system recharges the 12 V very efficiently as soon as the car is in READY, so 10 minutes around town don’t punish it the way they punish a petrol car. What really wears the auxiliary battery is age and, above all, heat: in Málaga the 12 V often stops at 4-6 years. Add the standby draw when the car sits for weeks and you see why so many Yaris Cross won’t go into READY one ordinary morning. Regular use and, if you leave it standing for long, a suitable maintainer for the 12 V make a real difference.
How much it costs in Málaga
The price ranges we work with, fitting included:
- AGM: 180-280 €. What the vast majority of Yaris Cross take: the auxiliary AGM battery of every hybrid (116, AWD-i and 130 GR Sport).
- Premium AGM: 280-380 €. For highly equipped versions, or if you want a top-tier AGM with maximum durability against Málaga’s heat.
- EFB: 130-230 €. Only for the petrol variant with Start-Stop (market-dependent), which is not a hybrid.
- Conventional: 85-140 €. Barely ever applies to the Yaris Cross; it would only make sense on a very basic entry petrol without Start-Stop. On the hybrid, never.
Guide prices, installation included. The final price may vary depending on how complex the installation is and on the battery specifications. Ask us for a no-obligation quote.

Don’t touch the traction battery: that’s official Toyota service.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery does the Toyota Yaris Cross take?
The Toyota Yaris Cross is a hybrid B-SUV and takes a 12 V auxiliary battery of the AGM type, around 45 Ah. Note: on the hybrid that battery doesn’t start the engine —the high-voltage traction battery does that— but wakes the car, powers the electronics and brings up READY mode. All the hybrid versions (1.5 Hybrid 116, AWD-i and 130 GR Sport) use an auxiliary AGM; only the non-hybrid petrol variant, market-dependent, takes an EFB of around 60 Ah with Start-Stop. On the hybrids we don’t give a CCA because the 12 V turns no starter motor. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it from the number plate and fit it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
Does the 12 V battery start the engine?
No. On the hybrid Yaris Cross the combustion engine and the system start thanks to the high-voltage traction battery, not the 12 V. The 12 V is auxiliary: it wakes the electronics, closes the relays and lets the car go into READY mode. That’s why, when this battery fails, the symptom isn’t a starter motor cranking slowly, but the car failing to reach READY, not waking up or filling the dash with warning lights. It’s a key difference from a conventional car, and also why it must never be replaced with an ordinary battery.
My Yaris Cross won’t go into READY, is it the 12 V?
Very likely. On a hybrid, when the 12 V auxiliary battery is low or flat, the car doesn’t reach READY mode: it sits with warning lights on, the dash flickers or it simply doesn’t respond after several days parked. It’s the typical 12 V failure on the Yaris Cross, and it usually shows up when the car goes many days unused, because the connected services and the smart key keep drawing power at rest. Bring it in or give us the number plate: with the free Midtronics check we see in 5 minutes whether the auxiliary has lost health or is just discharged.
Can I fit a conventional instead of AGM?
No. The auxiliary battery on the hybrid Yaris Cross is AGM by design: it works with frequent cycling and under demanding conditions, and a conventional one won’t withstand that regime or provide the same reserve. Fitting a conventional where the car asks for AGM leads to unreliable READY, dash warnings and a very short service life. From AGM you don’t drop to a lower type. With the number plate we confirm the exact size and AGM model.
Do you change the traction battery?
No. The high-voltage traction battery of the Yaris Cross is a component of the hybrid system and its maintenance is for the official Toyota service. We work on the 12 V auxiliary battery, which is the one that runs down with use, age and heat, and the one that leaves the car unable to reach READY. That one we do stock —Varta AGM— and change in about 15 minutes with no appointment.
AGM or EFB for the Yaris Cross?
On the Yaris Cross the answer is almost always AGM: all the hybrid versions carry an auxiliary AGM battery and it must not be downgraded to EFB or conventional. EFB only comes into play if your car is the petrol variant with Start-Stop (market-dependent), which is not a hybrid. If you’re unsure which is yours, the number plate settles it in a minute; in Málaga, on top of that, the heat makes AGM pay off even more.
How much does it cost to change a Yaris Cross battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) the auxiliary AGM battery that almost every hybrid Yaris Cross takes costs 180-280 €, and a premium AGM with maximum durability 280-380 €; if your car is the petrol variant with Start-Stop, an EFB costs 130-230 € and a conventional one 85-140 €, always including fitting. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, OBD-II coding if your Yaris Cross needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer’s, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
