Need a battery for your Toyota C-HR in Málaga? The C-HR is a hybrid, and that completely changes what it needs: its 12 V battery is an auxiliary AGM type and does not start the combustion engine —that job belongs to the high-voltage traction battery through the electric motor—. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we identify the 12 V one from the number plate and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics test and recycling included. Call us on 952 31 01 18.

Key facts

  • Type: on the hybrid C-HR, a 12 V auxiliary AGM battery; only the 1.2 Turbo petrol, without hybrid drive, uses an EFB because of its Start-Stop.
  • It does not crank the engine: the 12 V is auxiliary; the engine is started by the hybrid system with the traction battery. If the 12 V goes flat, the C-HR won't reach «READY».
  • Typical capacity: ~45-50 Ah on the hybrids' auxiliary AGM; 60-70 Ah and 560-640 A on the 1.2 Turbo petrol.
  • Price with fitting: conventional 85-140 €, EFB 130-230 €, AGM 180-280 €, premium AGM 280-380 €.
  • Real service life in Málaga: 4-6 years for EFB, 5-7 years for AGM; the heat punishes the hybrid auxiliary battery.
  • Where: Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. Fitted in about 15 minutes, no appointment. Official Varta Distributor since 1999.

Which battery does the Toyota C-HR take?

The first thing to understand about the C-HR is that almost the whole range is hybrid, and in a hybrid the 12 V battery does not do its usual job. Here it does not start the combustion engine: that is done by the hybrid system with the high-voltage traction battery. The 12 V one is an auxiliary AGM battery that powers the electronics, gives the «READY» mode and keeps the lights, locking and screen alive. The only exception is the 1.2 Turbo petrol (C-HR I, depending on market), which is not a hybrid: that one does have conventional Start-Stop and an EFB.

VersionSystemRecommended typeIndicative capacity / cranking

C-HR I 2.0 Hybrid (2020-2023)Hybrid HEVAuxiliary AGM~45-50 Ah / —
C-HR I 1.2 Turbo petrol (2016-2019, depending on market)Start-Stop (not hybrid)EFB~60-70 Ah / 560-640 A
C-HR II 1.8 / 2.0 Hybrid (2023-)Hybrid HEVAuxiliary AGM~45-50 Ah / —
C-HR II 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid (2023-)Plug-in hybridAuxiliary AGM~45-50 Ah / —

These are indicative ranges: Toyota adjusts the 12 V size by year, trim and market, and we're not going to invent a part number for you over the internet. What is firm: if your C-HR is a hybrid —which it most likely is—, it needs an auxiliary AGM, never a conventional one; only the 1.2 Turbo petrol steps outside that rule with an EFB. On the hybrids we don't talk about cranking amps (CCA) because that battery doesn't turn the engine: that's why you see «—» in the cranking column. Confirm it with the number plate.

Golden rule

On a hybrid Toyota C-HR the 12 V battery is auxiliary and AGM: it does not start the engine. Never replace it with a conventional one.

The traction battery is a matter for the official Toyota service; we change the 12 V one.

How to find out which one is yours

Forget hunting for the part number on forums. Give us the number plate —from the quote form on this page, on WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18— and we'll confirm whether your C-HR takes the hybrid's auxiliary AGM or the 1.2 Turbo's EFB, the size and the final fitted price.

Want an idea first? Use the “which battery do I need?” test. And if what you want to know is whether yours will survive another summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes, no obligation: it measures the real charge and health of the 12 V, not just a voltage reading.

Three details help narrow it down: generation (C-HR I or C-HR II), powertrain (1.8 or 2.0 Hybrid, 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid or the 1.2 Turbo petrol) and year.

Signs it is time to replace it

On a C-HR the warning is not “lazy cranking”, because the 12 V doesn't turn the engine. The pattern is different and very recognisable:

  • It won't reach «READY», or takes a while to. You press the start button and the car doesn't get into drive mode, or struggles to. It's the clearest symptom of a flat 12 V.
  • It dies after several days parked. The telematics and the smart key keep drawing power at rest; if the 12 V is already old, the car won't wake up after a few days unused. A classic after the holidays.
  • Several warning lights on at once when it wakes up (hybrid, ABS, steering, traction): it's not that five things have broken, it's that the 12 V isn't giving a stable voltage.
  • The screen reboots or loses its settings, and the central locking is slow to respond when you unlock.
  • Age: the hybrid auxiliary battery usually lasts 4-6 years, and Málaga's heat punishes it and shortens that window.

And here's a nuance about hybrids that almost nobody tells you: short trips matter less than in a combustion car, because the hybrid system recharges the 12 V from the traction battery and doesn't rely on a classic alternator. What really kills the C-HR's 12 V is heat ageing and standby power draw when the car sits for days. If yours sleeps in the sun or you use it little, a trickle charger on the 12 V helps a lot.

How much it costs in Málaga

The price ranges we work with, fitting included:

  • AGM: 180-280 €. The typical case for the C-HR: almost all are hybrids and carry the 12 V auxiliary AGM.
  • Premium AGM: 280-380 €. For highly equipped versions, the 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid or if you want maximum durability against Málaga's heat.
  • EFB: 130-230 €. Only for the 1.2 Turbo petrol with Start-Stop, the non-hybrid version of the C-HR.
  • Conventional: 85-140 €. It rarely applies on the C-HR; we only suggest it if your specific version allows it.

Frequently asked questions

Which battery does the Toyota C-HR take?

The Toyota C-HR is, across almost its whole range, a hybrid: it carries a 12 V auxiliary AGM battery of around 45-50 Ah that powers the electronics and does not start the engine. The C-HR I and II 1.8 and 2.0 Hybrid and the 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid all use that auxiliary AGM. The only exception is the 1.2 Turbo petrol (C-HR I, depending on market), without hybrid drive and with Start-Stop, which uses an EFB of around 60-70 Ah and 560-640 A. These are indicative ranges and on the hybrids you'll see «—» in the cranking column because that battery doesn't turn the engine. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor, we confirm it from the number plate and fit it in about 15 minutes with no appointment.

Does the 12 V battery start the C-HR's engine?

No. On the hybrid C-HR the combustion engine is started by the hybrid system through the electric motor and the high-voltage traction battery. The 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers up the electronics, gives the «READY» mode and feeds the lights, locking and screen. That's why on the hybrid versions we don't talk about cranking amps (CCA): that battery doesn't turn the engine. Even so it is essential, because without 12 V the car won't wake up or reach «READY».

My C-HR won't reach READY or won't respond, is it the 12 V battery?

Most likely, yes. If when you press the start button the C-HR doesn't reach «READY», takes a while, lights up several warnings at once or doesn't respond after several days parked, the number-one suspect is the 12 V auxiliary battery, not the traction one. The traction battery can be full and, even so, without 12 V the car won't start the system. It's a typical fault after the holidays or spells without using the car, because the telematics and the smart key keep drawing power at rest. Bring it in or call us: we check it for free and, if it's the culprit, we change it in about 15 minutes.

Can I fit a conventional battery instead of the AGM?

It's not advisable. The hybrid C-HR leaves the factory with a 12 V AGM type because it withstands charge and discharge cycles a conventional one can't, and the system expects that behaviour. Fitting an open lead-acid conventional in its place shortens its life to months and can trigger warnings. And if your C-HR is the 1.2 Turbo petrol with Start-Stop, no either: that one needs an EFB as a minimum. With the number plate we confirm the exact type your version takes.

Do you change the hybrid traction battery?

No. The high-voltage traction battery is the remit of the official Toyota service and is not handled outside it. What we change —and it's what fails day to day— is the 12 V auxiliary battery: an ordinary AGM we stock and fit in about 15 minutes. If your problem is that the C-HR won't reach «READY» or dies after a few days parked, it's almost always the 12 V, not the traction one.

Does the C-HR need AGM or EFB?

It depends on the version. The vast majority of C-HRs are hybrids (1.8 and 2.0 Hybrid and 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid) and carry a 12 V auxiliary AGM: that's the one we fit. Only the 1.2 Turbo petrol, without hybrid drive and with Start-Stop, uses an EFB. Never go down from AGM to EFB or fit a conventional in a hybrid. With the number plate we confirm it in a minute.

How much does it cost to change a Toyota C-HR battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) the 12 V auxiliary AGM that most hybrid C-HRs carry costs 180-280 €, and a premium AGM for the best-equipped versions or the Plug-in 280-380 €, always including fitting. If your C-HR is the 1.2 Turbo petrol with Start-Stop, the EFB costs 130-230 €, and a conventional 85-140 € in the rare case it applies. The price includes a genuine Varta battery, fitting, OBD-II coding if your Toyota C-HR needs it and recycling of the old one. We give you the final price before touching the car and the warranty is the manufacturer's, in line with Spanish RDL 7/2021.
