5 common mistakes when changing a car battery (only a specialist detects)
RSSChanging a car battery seems simple: two screws, two cables, one new battery. But in our workshop in Málaga we see mistakes only detected with technical experience that cost customers hundreds of euros. Here are the 5 most common.
Mistake 1: Reversed polarity (the most expensive)
Connecting red (+) to negative and black (−) to positive. Burns fuses, damages ECU (€600-2,000), can ruin alternator. Avoid: identify terminals before touching anything. Connect positive first, then negative. Disconnect negative first, then positive.
Mistake 2: Not coding new battery on BMS cars
Premium European (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Range Rover) register every battery installed. Without OBD-II coding, the car applies wrong charge profile. Battery lasts 3-4 years instead of 6-8. Avoid: demand BMS coding via OBD-II. Included at Málaga Baterías.
Mistake 3: Replacing AGM with conventional
To save €80, customers sometimes fit conventional where AGM is required. The car charges with AGM profile → conventional overcharges, loses electrolyte. Life: 12-18 months instead of 5-7 years. Avoid: respect the OEM technology.
Mistake 4: Loose terminals
Causes intermittent electrical arcs, voltage drops, accelerates corrosion. Worst case: terminal heating, fire risk. Avoid: 6-8 Nm torque; firm by hand without bending. Re-check after a month.
Mistake 5: Missing parasitic drain
If your battery drains in a few days, problem may not be the battery — could be parasitic drain (alarm, dashcam parked mode, GPS). Normal: 20-50 mA. If 200+ mA, that's your real problem. Avoid: measure standby current before buying a new battery. Free at Málaga Baterías.
Real case: 3 batteries in a year
Eduardo, taxi driver. Three batteries in 14 months. We measured: 380 mA standby. A dashcam in parked mode was draining it. We disabled parked mode and installed a maintainer. Latest battery: 22 months and counting.
FAQ
Can I change battery myself?
Simple cars without Start-Stop, yes (mind polarity). Modern cars with BMS, better leave it to a specialist.
Just jump-start instead?
Safe if done right. Only a temporary fix though.
What if I reverse polarity?
Few seconds: probably just fuses. Longer: ECU damage. Don't start the car. Tow to a specialist.
