UPS battery: how often to replace it and how to tell which one it takes (Málaga)
RSSA UPS is the box that keeps your computer, card terminal or small server running when the power goes off. It only works while its battery is healthy, and that battery wears out even if your office or shop in Málaga has not had a power cut for months. In this guide we explain how often it is worth replacing, which warning signs to look for and how to find out which battery your UPS takes without opening anything, so you get the right one first time.
What the UPS battery does and why it wears out without power cuts
The UPS is plugged into the mains and into your equipment: the accountancy firm’s computer, the shop’s card terminal, a clinic’s reception desk or, at home, the computer, the router or the network drive. While there is power, it simply keeps the battery charged. When the power goes off or dips, the battery takes over and gives you time to save your work, finish the sale or shut down the server calmly.
That battery is usually a sealed lead-acid (AGM) unit, one of the so-called stationary batteries, which live permanently connected and charged. That constant charging, day and night, ages it little by little. This is why a UPS battery can be worn out without ever having done its job: on the day of the first real power cut you discover it does not hold. More about them on our page on stationary batteries.
Signs that the UPS battery needs replacing
The UPS itself usually warns you. Look out for:
- A “Replace Battery” warning or LED (or a battery icon on the display), often with beeping.
- A failed self-test: many UPS units test themselves from time to time or when switched on, and warn you if the battery does not pass.
- It shuts down when the power goes: the computer or the card terminal switches off instantly during a power cut, even though the UPS was on.
- It lasts much less than before: where you used to have time to save and shut down, now it barely holds.
If the UPS has management software on the computer, the warning usually shows there too. At any of these signs, check the manufacturer’s manual and plan the replacement: do not wait for the next blackout. If you are not sure which battery to order, send us a photo of the label on WhatsApp.
How often to replace it: between 3 and 5 years, depending on use and heat
As a rough guide, a UPS battery lasts between 3 and 5 years. It is a range: two identical UPS units may need a new battery at different times.
Heat shortens its life
This is what we see most in Málaga. A UPS tucked away in a loft space, in an unventilated cupboard next to the router and the server, or in a room that stays shut in summer, runs hotter and its battery ages sooner. If you can, put it somewhere ventilated, out of direct sunlight and with space around it, and follow the siting instructions in the manual.
Use matters too
A battery that goes through frequent power cuts or dips is discharged and recharged more often, and wears out sooner than one that hardly ever works. The same happens if the UPS is heavily loaded with equipment. If your business depends on the UPS, note the date of the last replacement and do not wait until it fails.
How to find out which battery your UPS takes without opening anything
There is no need to take the UPS apart: what you can see from the outside, or what is printed on the battery if you already have it in your hand, is almost always enough.
The UPS label
On the back or underneath the UPS there is a label with the make, the model and sometimes the replacement battery part number. A clear photo of that label is usually enough for us to point you in the right direction. The UPS manual also states which battery it takes and how many.
The battery label
If your technician has already taken the battery out following the manual, or you have it in front of you, note down:
- Voltage: in office and home UPS units, almost always 12 V.
- Capacity (Ah): the most common are 7 or 9 Ah.
- Dimensions: length, width and height. It has to fit in its compartment.
- Terminal type: most have faston-type blade terminals, F1 or F2, which are not interchangeable.
- How many there are: one, two or several connected together.
If the label says “high rate” or shows a power rating per cell, note that too. With those details, or with a photo on WhatsApp, we confirm the part number and tell you whether it is available or needs ordering. There is more information on our page on UPS batteries in Málaga.
Which battery each type of UPS usually takes
Take this as general guidance: the label and the manual for your unit are what count.
| Type of UPS (approximate) | What it usually takes | Who should replace it |
|---|---|---|
| Home or small office (computer, router, card terminal) | One or two 12 V AGM batteries of 7-9 Ah | You or your technician, following the UPS manufacturer’s manual |
| Medium or rack-mounted (server, phone system, network cabinet) | Several identical 12 V batteries connected in series | Your IT technician or the UPS service provider |
| Large (server room, critical equipment) | Battery banks, sometimes in separate cabinets | Always a specialist technician |

If it takes several batteries, replace them all at once with identical ones
When a UPS has two or more batteries, they work as a set. If you replace only the one that looks worst, the new one sits alongside worn ones and the set performs like the weakest: the UPS still does not hold. That is why they are all replaced at once, and all identical: same voltage, same capacity, same type and, ideally, the same model.
What about fitting more Ah than it had? Sometimes it is possible if voltage, dimensions and terminal match, but do not take it for granted: ask us first and check what the UPS manufacturer’s manual says.
Who does the replacement
We sell and deliver the battery; we do not carry out the replacement or configure the UPS. The customer or their technician does it, always following the UPS manufacturer’s manual, which explains how to do it on that specific model. On small office or home UPS units, many manuals describe the replacement for the user; on medium, rack-mounted or large UPS units, leave it to your technician.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a UPS battery be replaced?
As a rough guide, every 3 to 5 years, depending on use and heat, even if there have been no power cuts, because the battery is always on charge. If the UPS shows “Replace Battery”, fails its self-test or shuts down when the power goes, replace it now, even if it has not reached that age.
How do I know which battery my UPS takes without opening it?
Check the label on the back or underside of the UPS (make and model) and its manual. If you already have the battery in your hand, note the voltage, Ah, dimensions, terminal type and how many there are. You can also send us a photo of the label on WhatsApp and we will confirm the part number.
Do all the UPS batteries have to be replaced at once?
Yes. If the UPS has several, they work as a set and are all replaced at once with identical ones: same voltage, capacity and type. If you mix a new one with worn ones, the set performs like the weakest.
Do you replace the UPS battery for me?
No. We sell and deliver the battery, but we do not carry out the replacement or configure the UPS. You or your technician do it following the UPS manufacturer’s manual. For rack-mounted or large UPS units, always leave it to your technician.
