12 V battery in EV or hybrid: what you need to know
RSSEVs and hybrids have two batteries: traction (kWh, 400-800 V) and auxiliary 12 V. The 12 V still drains (alarm, ECU, locks) and is usually AGM. If the 12 V dies, the car will not switch on even with a full traction battery.
Many people think an EV "has no battery" in the traditional sense. It does: a 12 V battery powering all auxiliary electronics, exactly like a combustion car. 12 V failure is one of the most common workshop issues with EVs.
Why two batteries
The traction battery (40-100 kWh, 400-800 V) drives the electric motor. For everything else (locking, alarm, BMS, ECU, GPS, infotainment standby) there is a 12 V auxiliary battery, identical in format to a combustion car battery.
The 12 V is recharged from the traction pack via a DC-DC converter when the car is "ready". In long parking, modern alarms or OTA update drain, it can still go flat.
Typical 12 V failure symptoms
- Car will not turn "ready" (main screen unresponsive).
- Central locking does not respond to the key.
- "Low 12 V battery" or "Check system" message (Tesla, BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq, Nissan Leaf).
- Slow or erratic charging (in some models the 12 V controls the charging contactor).
If your Tesla, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 or any hybrid (Toyota Prius, Lexus, Ford Kuga PHEV) refuses to switch on with the traction battery charged, it is almost certainly the 12 V.
Which 12 V battery to buy for EV/hybrid
AGM as standard
Most modern EVs/hybrids use AGM. Currents are low (no starter motor) but deep cycles from inverter and BMS are frequent — AGM handles cycling better.
Compatibility
Some models have a monitoring pinout (Hyundai, Kia) that will not accept AGM with internal BMS; Toyota Prius requires a specific vented battery. Check the fitment for your model before buying.
Why not aftermarket lithium 12 V
Some brands sell 12 V LiFePO4 for EVs. Real issues: the car BMS is calibrated for lead-acid curves; different charging voltages can trigger errors. Only recommended if the manufacturer approves.
How to proceed with an EV/hybrid in Málaga
If your EV 12 V fails, call us before moving the car. Some EVs do not allow towing without prior steps (Tesla requires entering "tow mode" from the screen, impossible with a dead 12 V).
Teslas have an auxiliary 12 V port under the front trunk that allows jump-starting with a booster — find the manual or ask us first.
