12 V battery in EV or hybrid: what you need to know
RSSElectric and hybrid cars carry two batteries: the traction battery (high voltage) and the auxiliary 12 V. The 12 V also drains (alarm, ECU, locks) and usually needs AGM. If the 12 V dies, the car will not switch on even with a full traction battery.
Many people think an electric car "has no battery" in the traditional sense. It does: a 12 V battery powering all the auxiliary electronics, exactly like a combustion car. Its failure is one of the most common problems in EV workshops.
Why there are two batteries
The traction battery (in an EV, 40-100 kWh and ~350-450 V, up to 800 V on some platforms; in a conventional hybrid, 1-2 kWh and ~200-300 V) drives the electric motor. For everything else (locking, alarm, BMS, ECU, GPS, infotainment standby) there is a 12 V auxiliary battery, identical in format to a combustion car battery.
The 12 V is recharged from the traction battery through a DC-DC converter when the car is "on" (ready). But during long parking, with modern alarms or parasitic drain from OTA updates, it can go flat.
Typical 12 V failure symptoms
- The car will not turn "ready" (main screen unresponsive).
- Central locking does not respond to the key.
- "Low 12 V battery" or "Check system" message (Tesla, BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq, Nissan Leaf).
- Slow or erratic charging (on some models the 12 V controls the charging contactor).
If your Tesla, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 or any hybrid (Toyota Prius, Lexus, Ford Kuga PHEV) refuses to "start" but the traction battery is charged, it is almost certainly the 12 V.
Which 12 V battery to buy for an EV/hybrid
AGM as standard
Almost all modern EVs/hybrids use AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat). Although the currents are low (there is no starter motor), the deep cycles from the inverter and BMS are frequent — and AGM handles cycling better.
Compatibility
Some models have a battery sensor (IBS) on the negative terminal (Hyundai, Kia) that requires registering the new battery; others (Toyota Prius) require a specific vented battery. Check the fitment for your model before buying.
Why not an aftermarket lithium battery
Some brands sell 12 V LiFePO4 for EVs. Real issues: the car BMS is calibrated for lead-acid curves; different charging voltages can trigger errors. Only advisable if the manufacturer approves it.
How to proceed if you have an EV/hybrid in Málaga
If your EV's 12 V fails, call us before moving the car. Some EVs do not allow towing without prior steps (Tesla asks you to enter "tow mode" from the screen, impossible with a dead 12 V).
On Teslas, there is an external auxiliary 12 V port under the front bonnet that lets you jump-start with a booster — before doing so, check the manual or ask us.
