Almost the whole Mercedes-Benz range comes with a 12 V AGM battery as standard, and many models also have a separate auxiliary or backup battery on top of the main one. The new battery must be registered in the ECU (otherwise the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long), and it is sometimes fitted under the passenger seat or in the boot, not under the bonnet. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes, registration included. Guide prices, fitting included: 85-140 € conventional (older entry models only), 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Plenty of Mercedes cars drive around Málaga, from the urban A-Class to the company E-Class, and almost all of them share the same electrical logic: AGM from the factory, active charge management and, on the best-equipped ones, a second support battery for the Start-Stop and the safety systems. That is why here changing the battery is not just undoing two terminals: you have to find where it is (sometimes in the boot) and register it in the ECU. We do it on the spot, with no appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga, all in-store (we do not offer home fitting).

What battery does a Mercedes-Benz take?

The Mercedes quirk is threefold: AGM as standard across almost the whole range, mandatory registration of the new battery in the ECU and, on many models, an extra auxiliary/backup battery. On top of that, the main one is not always under the bonnet: on several saloons and SUVs it sits under the seat or in the boot. Guide values, all 12 V:

Mercedes-Benz range12 V technologyRegistrationNote
A-Class / B-Class (compacts)AGM (EFB on older entry models)MandatoryStart-Stop and terminal sensor
C-Class / E-Class (saloons)AGM, sometimes + auxiliary batteryMandatoryOften located in the boot
GLA / GLB / GLC (SUV)AGMMandatoryMany with a backup battery
EQ Boost 48 V mild-hybrid12 V AGM (on top of the 48 V system)MandatoryThe 48 V does not crank; the 12 V AGM is still the onboard one
Plug-in hybrid / EQ electric12 V AGM or EFB (auxiliary)Mandatory12 V service battery: powers electronics, does not crank or move the car (cranking —)

Guide values: they vary with year, trim and equipment. "—" = data we confirm from your plate.

Rule of thumb: if your Mercedes came from the factory with AGM, keep AGM. You can step up from EFB to AGM, but never drop from AGM to EFB, because the car has a cycling and electrical load (Start-Stop, driver assistance, auxiliary battery) that an EFB cannot handle.

  • 03Fitted in 15 minutes
  • 04ECU registration and recycling

Signs it is time to change it

  • Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.
  • Start-Stop stops kicking in, or it does and the engine restarts on its own a few seconds later.
  • Dashboard messages such as "battery", "reduced functions" or warnings that assistance and comfort systems are off.
  • Battery changed recently but not registered in the ECU: the car treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
  • Odd electrical glitches (locking, windows, screen) that come and go.
  • More than 4-5 years. In Málaga an AGM lasts on average 5-7 years because of the coastal heat.

Frequently asked questions about the Mercedes-Benz battery

What battery does a Mercedes-Benz take?

Almost the whole Mercedes-Benz range comes with a 12 V AGM battery as standard, with active charge management. Many models also have an auxiliary or backup battery on top of the main one, and on several saloons and SUVs the battery sits under the seat or in the boot, not under the bonnet. The new battery must be registered in the ECU. These are guide values: confirm yours free from your plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change a Mercedes battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) it costs 130-230 € with EFB on entry models, 180-280 € with AGM (most of the range) and 280-380 € with high-capacity AGM on the E/S-Class and large well-equipped SUVs, always with fitting and registration included. The test and recycling are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one under RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve you with no appointment.

Do you have to register or code the battery on a Mercedes?

Yes, it is mandatory. The energy management system stores the battery history and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as if it were the old one, mistreats it and halves its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same change and at no extra cost.

Where is the battery on a Mercedes?

It depends on the model. On many C-, E- and S-Class, and on several SUVs, the main battery is in the boot or under the passenger seat, not under the bonnet. On top of that, quite a few models carry a second, smaller auxiliary or backup battery for the Start-Stop and the safety systems. We locate it, change it and register it; give us your plate and we confirm where yours is.

My Mercedes is an EQ Boost 48 V mild-hybrid or a hybrid, which 12 V battery does it take?

The EQ Boost 48 V system does not replace the 12 V battery: there is still a 12 V AGM that is the onboard one and the one that gives ignition. On hybrids and electric EQ models that 12 V is auxiliary or a service battery: it powers the electronics but does not crank the engine or move the car. If it goes flat, the car will not give ignition or READY even if the high-voltage system is charged. It is usually AGM or EFB and also has to be registered.

How long does a Mercedes battery last in Málaga?

An AGM lasts 5 to 7 years on average. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so here batteries last on average less than in northern Spain. If yours is over four or five years old, or the Start-Stop starts to fail, drop by for the free test.
