The Mercedes A-Class battery is 12 V and, on the W177 (from 2018), is AGM as standard, around 60-80 Ah and 680-800 A depending on the engine: AGM on the A 180, A 200, A 220 and A 250 petrol and on the A 180 d and A 200 d diesel, all with Start-Stop, plus a 12 V auxiliary battery on the A 250e plug-in hybrid, which does not start the engine. The battery sits in the engine bay and, since it has a sensor on the terminal, the new one must be registered in the ECU. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we check it free of charge and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes. Guideline prices with fitting included: 130-230 € EFB, 180-280 € AGM and 280-380 € higher-capacity AGM.

Mercedes A-Class won’t start? Today, with no appointmentSend us your number plate on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the exact battery for your Mercedes A-Class and the price in minutes.

The Mercedes A-Class is one of the most common premium compacts on Málaga's roads, and plenty pass through the workshop: from the everyday A 180 petrol to the A 250e plug-in and the odd AMG. They all share one important thing: the W177 comes with AGM from the factory and a battery sensor on the terminal, so fitting the battery and closing the bonnet isn't enough — it has to be registered with the ECU so the car charges it correctly. We do it on the spot, without an appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga, and the registration is included.

How to find out which one your A-Class needs

Between engines and trim levels there are far too many combinations to guess. Give us the number plate on WhatsApp or at the shop and we'll tell you the Ah, CCA, technology, polarity and exact dimensions. A tip: on the W177 the battery is in the engine bay and has a sensor on the negative terminal; if you see it, your A-Class manages charging actively and needs AGM plus registration of the new battery. As it's AGM as standard, you can move up to a higher-capacity AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB or a conventional battery. If you're not sure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check.

Signs the A-Class battery needs replacing

  • Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing in the morning in Málaga.
  • Start-Stop doesn't engage, or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on the W177.
  • Dashboard messages such as "Vehicle battery: consult workshop", or electrical glitches that come and go.
  • A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU: the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
  • On the A 250e plug-in, the car won't reach "READY" or even power up despite the high-voltage battery being charged: almost always the 12 V auxiliary.
  • More than 4 years old. In Málaga an AGM lasts 5-7 years on average and the coastal heat shortens that margin.

Mercedes A-Class battery FAQs

What battery does the Mercedes A-Class take and how many amps does it need?

The Mercedes A-Class battery is 12 V and, on the W177 (from 2018), is AGM as standard, around 60-80 Ah and 680-800 A depending on the engine: AGM on the A 180, A 200, A 220 and A 250 petrol and on the A 180 d and A 200 d diesel, all with Start-Stop, plus a 12 V auxiliary battery on the A 250e plug-in hybrid. The battery sits in the engine bay and has a sensor on the terminal, so the new one must be registered in the ECU. These are guideline figures: confirm them free of charge with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How much does it cost to change a Mercedes A-Class battery in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Mercedes A-Class battery costs 130-230 € if it uses EFB, 180-280 € with the standard AGM and 280-380 € with a higher-capacity AGM, always with fitting included. The ECU registration, the prior test and the recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set out in Spanish RDL 7/2021. We have been an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve customers without an appointment.

Does the battery need registering when you change it on an A-Class?

Yes. The W177 has a sensor on the terminal and an energy management system that keeps a history of the battery and adapts charging to its ageing: if you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as though it were the old one and halves its life. We do it with our diagnostic equipment during the same fitting, at no extra cost.

Can I fit a conventional battery instead of AGM on the A-Class?

No. The A-Class W177 uses AGM as standard because of its electrical load and its cycling with Start-Stop. An AGM can replace another AGM or step up in capacity, but you should never go down to an EFB or a conventional battery: they would last very little and the car would manage them badly. Saving there costs you the following year.

Where is the Mercedes A-Class battery located?

On the A-Class W177 the main 12 V battery is in the engine bay, not in the boot as on larger Mercedes models. Even so, because it has a sensor on the terminal, the new battery must be registered in the ECU just like across the rest of the range. If your car also carries a small auxiliary backup battery, we'll tell you from the number plate.

Does the 12 V battery start the Mercedes A-Class 250e?

No. On the A 250e plug-in the 12 V is auxiliary: it powers up the car and feeds the electronics, but it doesn't start or move the car — that's the high-voltage battery's job. If that 12 V goes flat, the car won't reach "READY" even with the traction battery charged. It's usually AGM or EFB and it also has to be registered when replaced.
