The Mercedes C-Class (W205 and W206) battery is 12 V and almost always AGM, with indicative capacities of 70-95 Ah and 720-850 A depending on the engine, plus a second auxiliary or backup battery on many versions. The EQ Boost 48 V mild-hybrids also carry a 12 V AGM on board, and the C 300 e/de plug-in hybrids use the 12 V one only as an auxiliary. On the C-Class the new battery must be registered in the control unit. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes. Indicative prices with fitting included: 130-230 € the auxiliary, 180-280 € AGM and 280-380 € high-capacity AGM.
The C-Class is one of the Mercedes models you see most on Málaga roads, both saloon and estate, and one of the models we change most batteries on for the brand. The catch is that a C-Class leaves no room for improvising: it runs AGM as standard, most units also carry an auxiliary backup battery and, above all, it requires the new battery to be registered in the control unit with the diagnostic tool; otherwise the system charges it badly and it lasts half as long. We do it on the spot, with no appointment and in store (we don't do home fitting), at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How to know which one your C-Class needs
Between W205 and W206, petrol, diesel, EQ Boost and plug-in hybrids there are too many combinations to guess, and many C-Class units also hide a second auxiliary battery. Look at the negative terminal: if you see a sensor with a connector (the IBS battery state sensor), your car manages charging actively and the new battery must be registered in the control unit. The safest way is to give us the number plate on WhatsApp or when you arrive at the shop and we'll tell you capacity, CCA, technology, dimensions and whether your unit carries an auxiliary battery. If you are unsure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check.

Get a quoteSigns the C-Class battery needs changing
- Slow cold starting, especially early on the cooler mornings inland from Málaga.
- Start-Stop stops engaging, or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: a classic warning that the battery is no longer up to it.
- A message on the C-Class display such as «Battery, see owner's manual» or warnings that ECO/comfort systems are unavailable.
- Odd electrical faults (screens, locking, sensors) that usually point to the auxiliary backup battery, not the main one.
- Battery changed recently but not registered in the control unit: the car treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
- If it is a plug-in hybrid (C 300 e/de) and it won't power up or show «READY» even though the high-voltage battery is charged: the culprit is the 12 V auxiliary.
- Over 4-5 years old. In Málaga an AGM lasts 5-7 years on average, and the coastal heat punishes it.

Frequently asked questions about the Mercedes C-Class battery
Which battery does the Mercedes C-Class take and how many amps does it need?
The Mercedes C-Class (W205 and W206) battery is 12 V and almost always AGM, with an indicative 70-95 Ah and 720-850 A depending on the engine, plus a second auxiliary or backup battery on many versions. How much does it cost to change a Mercedes C-Class battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Mercedes C-Class battery costs 130-230 € the auxiliary battery, 180-280 € with standard AGM and 280-380 € with high-capacity AGM, always with fitting included. The control-unit registration, the prior test and recycling of the used battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve without an appointment.
Does the battery need registering or coding when changed on a Mercedes C-Class?
Yes, it is mandatory. The C-Class has an IBS sensor on the negative terminal and an energy-management system that stores the battery's history; if you fit a new one without registering it in the control unit, the car charges it as if it were the old one and halves its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool in the same change and at no extra cost.
Why does my C-Class have two batteries?
Many C-Class units carry, besides the main battery, a second auxiliary or backup battery that powers safety and comfort systems and holds the voltage during Start-Stop restarts. When that auxiliary fails, odd electrical faults appear even though the main one is fine. With the number plate we tell you whether your unit has one and whether one or both need changing.
My C-Class is a plug-in hybrid and won't power up, is it the traction battery?
Almost never. On the C 300 e and C 300 de the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers up the ignition and feeds the electronics, but it does not move the car. If that 12 V goes flat, the C-Class won't show READY or power up even though the high-voltage battery is charged. It is usually AGM and also has to be registered when changed.
How long does a C-Class battery last in Málaga?
From 5 to 7 years for an AGM in good use, although the Málaga coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up wear, so here they last less on average than in northern Spain. Cars with a lot of Start-Stop and high electrical demand, like the C-Class, ask more of the battery. If yours is over four or five years old, drop by for the free test.
