The BMW range runs a 12 V battery, almost always AGM and often fitted in the boot: nearly every modern BMW has Start-Stop and an IBS sensor on the negative terminal, so a new battery must be registered in the ECU or the car charges it wrong and it lasts half as long. The 1/2/3 Series carry around 70-80 Ah, the 5/7 Series and the X models 80-105 Ah, and the 48 V mild-hybrids also have a separate 12 V AGM on board. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and fit it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes, registration included. Guide prices, fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.
Plenty of BMWs are on the road around Málaga, and they're among the cars where doing the battery change properly really shows. Almost all have Start-Stop, active charge management with an IBS sensor and, across much of the range, the battery in the boot. Fitting a new battery and closing the bonnet isn't enough: it has to be registered in the ECU so the car treats it as new. We do it on the spot, with no appointment, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga, and it's included at no extra charge.
What battery does a BMW take?
BMW fits AGM as standard across most of the range because Start-Stop and the on-board loads demand a battery that withstands cycling. Two quirks shape the change: the IBS sensor on the negative terminal, which requires registering the new battery in the ECU (otherwise charging is wrong and life is halved), and the boot location on much of the range, with a jump-start terminal under the bonnet. On 48 V mild-hybrids there are two systems: the 48 V one and a 12 V AGM that is the on-board battery and the one we change here. Guide values, all 12 V:
| Range type | Typical technology | IBS registration | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Series / 2 Series (petrol and diesel compacts) | AGM (EFB on entry level) | Required | 70-80 Ah; Start-Stop widespread |
| 3 Series / 4 Series | AGM | Required | Battery often in the boot |
| 5 Series / 7 Series (premium) | Higher-capacity AGM | Required | 80-105 Ah; sometimes an extra auxiliary battery |
| X1 / X3 (SUV) | AGM | Required | High loads; prior test recommended |
| 48 V mild-hybrid (recent petrol/diesel) | 12 V AGM (separate from the 48 V system) | Required | The 12 V is the on-board one; CCA — |
Guide values: they change with the year, trim and equipment. "—" = a figure we confirm from your number plate.
Practical rule on a BMW: never drop from AGM to EFB. You can move up from EFB to AGM, but if your car left the factory with AGM you must keep AGM, always with the ECU registration done after the change.

How we do it
No appointment · in about 15 minutes
- 01Give us your plate
- 02Free Midtronics test
- 03Fitting in 15 minutes
- 04IBS registration and recycling
Signs it's time to change it
- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.
- Start-Stop won't engage, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself after a few seconds.
- Dashboard warnings such as "battery discharge at rest" or comfort-system faults (seats, windows, iDrive).
- Battery changed recently but not registered in the ECU: the car treats it as the old one, charges it wrong and it lasts half as long.
- On mild-hybrid or hybrid, the car won't power up even though the drivetrain is fine: it's usually the on-board 12 V.
- Over 4 years old. In Málaga an AGM lasts 5-7 years on average and a conventional one 4-6.

Frequently asked questions about the BMW battery
What battery does a BMW take and how many amps does it need?
The BMW range runs a 12 V battery, almost always AGM: the 1/2/3 Series carry around 70-80 Ah, and the 5/7 Series and the X models 80-105 Ah, with higher CCA. Nearly all have Start-Stop and an IBS sensor on the negative terminal, so a new battery must be registered in the ECU. On 48 V mild-hybrids, the 12 V AGM is the on-board one. These are guide values: confirm them free with your number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.
How much does it cost to change a BMW battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a BMW battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB, 180-280 € with AGM and 280-380 € with a high-capacity AGM on 5/7 Series and large X models, always with fitting and registration included. The prior test and recycling of the old battery aren't charged separately, and the warranty is the one set by RDL 7/2021. We've been an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we serve you with no appointment.
Do you have to register or code the battery when changing it on a BMW?
Yes. Almost every BMW has an IBS sensor on the negative terminal that logs the battery's state, and the ECU adapts charging to its ageing. If you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as if it were the old one and halves its life. We do it with the diagnostic tool in the same change and at no extra charge.
Where is the battery on a BMW?
On much of the BMW range the battery is in the boot, under the floor or in a side panel, not under the bonnet. For jump-starting there's a power terminal in the engine bay. We know where it goes on each model and change it without losing the car's memory, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment.
My BMW is a 48 V mild-hybrid, what 12 V battery does it take?
48 V mild-hybrid BMWs have two systems: the 48 V one, which assists the engine, and a 12 V AGM battery that is the on-board one, powering ignition and the electronics. That 12 V is the one changed here, in AGM and with ECU registration. If it runs flat, the car may not power up even though everything else is fine.
How long does a BMW battery last in Málaga?
5 to 7 years for an AGM and 4 to 6 for a conventional one. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, come by for the free test.
