The Mini range uses a 12 V battery that is nearly always AGM: built on the BMW platform, the Cooper, Cooper S, JCW and petrol Countryman with Start-Stop carry AGM as standard, and even the electric Cooper SE uses a 12 V AGM or EFB as its auxiliary battery. Every Mini has an IBS sensor on the negative terminal, so the new battery must be registered in the car's control unit. What battery does a Mini use?
Mini shares its platform, electronics and energy management with BMW, and that defines its battery: 12 V AGM across almost the whole range, with an IBS sensor on the negative terminal that requires the new battery to be registered in the control unit. - Start-Stop no longer engages, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Minis.

It depends on the model and the year. On many Minis it sits under the bonnet, but on some versions the location is less usual and access is trickier. My Mini is electric (Cooper SE), does it also have a 12 V battery?
Yes. The Cooper SE has a high-voltage traction battery that moves the car and, separately, a 12 V auxiliary battery (AGM or EFB) that provides the ignition and powers the electronics. That 12 V does not start anything, but if it runs flat the car will not switch on or reach READY even if the traction battery is charged. That is the one we replace; the high-voltage battery is not touched.
How long does a Mini battery last in Málaga?
Four to six years for a conventional battery and five to seven for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, come by for the free test.
